A GUIDE TO LIVING WITH & TRAINING A FEARFUL DOG (66 pages) by Debbie Jacobs. An invaluable resource for owners and rescuers. A finalist in the 2008 Dog Writer’s Association of America’s writing competition A Guide to Living with & Training a Fearful Dog provides information regarding the most effective and humane ways to help fearful, shy or anxious dogs. Donated by Cathy Moyer and Joanne Sweeney.

OOGY: THE DOG ONLY A FAMILY COULD LOVE (214 pages) by Larry Levin. In the bestselling tradition of Rescuing Sprite comes the story of a puppy brought back from the brink of death, and the family he adopted. In 2002, Larry Levin and his twin sons, Dan and Noah, took their terminally ill cat to the Ardmore Animal Hospital outside Philadelphia to have the beloved pet put to sleep. What would begin as a terrible day suddenly got brighter as the ugliest dog they had ever seen–one who was missing an ear and had half his face covered in scar tissue–ran up to them and captured their hearts. The dog had been used as bait for fighting dogs when he was just a few months old. He had been thrown in a cage and left to die until the police rescued him and the staff at Ardmore Animal Hospital saved his life. The Levins, whose sons are themselves adopted, were unable to resist Oogy’s charms, and decided to take him home. Heartwarming and redemptive, Oogy is the story of the people who were determined to rescue this dog against all odds, and of the family who took him home, named him “Oogy” (an affectionate derivative of ugly), and made him one of their own. Donated by Liz Watson.
Rainbow Bridge Crossings
TARA 3 came to MAESSR as a result of a neglect case and quickly showed that she belonged. When the court case was finally over, Tara became a permanent and cherished member in her foster home, AMANDA SHOWALTER’s family. Tara was almost 14 YO when she passed, a gentle soul who wanted nothing more than to be near her mom. Tara lost her sight and hearing, partly due to breeding defects but never lost her spirit. She was an enthusiastic eater. If her food didn’t come fast enough, she would howl to remind everyone it was time. One of her favorite mischiefs was sneaking into the chicken coop to steal eggs. Tara’s days were happiest when she was close to her family. Her passing has left a hole in her family’s hearts that will never be filled. Tara was so special – resilient, loving, and full of personality. She gave and received so much love and is missed more than words can say.
