Update 12/13/04:Zimmie has been adopted!
Update 12/10/04:
Zimmie has improved a great deal in the last month while in foster care. He has settled into a nice routine. No accidents in the house last week and no wetting in the kennel during the day. He is spending about 7 hours in the kennel during the day and doing fine. Once out of the kennel, Zimmie fusses at his foster mom as they run to the back door as quickly as possible. Otherwise, he will occasionally, stand at the front door ready for a walk but it is still better to ask him every couple of hours just in case.
Zimmie is very smart and his foster mom changes her morning routine every few days to keep him from hiding in the bedroom when it is time to “kennel up”. As soon as she starts stuffing the Kong, Zimmie knows he is about to be kenneled. Zimmie has also learned how to open the storm door. During the snow storm, Zimmie played outside while his foster mom shoveled. He stayed near his mom and out of trouble until both were cold and tired. He is beautiful to watch as he runs and springs across mounds of snow. He has also been to the field off leash and did very well running ahead and coming back every few minutes to be sure I was keeping up. He comes running back (most of the time) when called and responds to a lip whistle.
Zimmie loves to go on walks. He likes to be brushed and will tolerate the ear cleaning. He plays ball and will drop it at your feet to throw again. He listens and responds well. He only eats when you are in the room with him and he often leaves food in the bowl to eat later. Although he still counter surfs from time to time, he knows he is not supposed to do it and will jump down quickly when you say his name.
His foster mom reports that unlike most of the fosters she has had, Zimmie pretty much ignores the little people. He does not mind the hugs and petting but he does not seek it out either.
The only problem his foster mom has seen is an occasional issue when he has something in his mouth. Sometimes he gives it up, sometimes he does not. When he has a very coveted piece of paper he growls and they are powerful deterrents for his foster mom not to try to take the item from him. We are working on the “drop it” command with him as he inconsistently responds to it. However, once you have his attention, he will trade you for something better like a treat!
Zimmie is a beautiful, fun loving, happy boy. Could your family be the one to make his new year bright?
Original:
Zimmie is a sweet, loving, energetic, young male Springer. He is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations. He is getting along with the resident female Springer Spaniel, who isn’t used to having a younger dog in the house. He seems to want to be the dominant dog. He knows some basic commands like sit, stay and will give you his paw. He listens when corrected and seems to be very trainable.
Zimmie is not is completely housetrained and is crated during the day. He does not go into the crate willingly, but must settle down because when we return home he is calm and happy to see his foster dad. He does not get on the furniture or the bed unless invited. He is curious and does check out the counters not to steal food, rather to see what’s up there. He is not territorial with his food. Zimmie’s foster mom reports he is happy to meet new dogs and people.
Zimmie is good with cats, in fact he is afraid of them. He walks well on the leash and has enjoyed exploring his new neighborhood. He loves riding in the car, especially in the front seat.
Zimmie is very sweet dog who is young and needs training. He does have plenty of puppy energy. The family who adopts Zimmie will surely love him and he will give them love in return. Do you have the time and energy for this sweet boy?
