Original: “Zeus is eager to please and quickly adapts to new situations, greeting both people and dogs with enthusiasm and maintaining a balanced energy level.”
At nine years old, Zeus spent nearly his entire life in Virginia with one devoted owner before being surrendered due to his owner’s illness. The owner could no longer care for this sweet, well-loved boy in the way Zeus deserved and he was confident that MAESSR would find Zeus a wonderful new home.
Similar to the Greek god, MAESSR’s Zeus is slightly older, regal and linked to the outdoors! He has a stable, confident, and affectionate temperament, making him both trainable and sociable. Zeus is eager to please and quickly adapts to new situations, greeting both people and dogs with enthusiasm and maintaining a balanced energy level. While he does have a strong prey drive and will chase cats and squirrels, he gets along well with other dogs.
Zeus has truly been a joy as a foster dog. He is fully housetrained, crate trained, and knows basic commands like “sit,” “down,” and “no,” responding well to gentle correction. Although he does not signal when he needs to go outside, his foster mom takes him out every 2-3 hours, which he looks forward to.
Zeus is a classic “Velcro dog” who always wants to be near his person. When he is left alone, he is crated to prevent him from getting anxious and running around the house. He sees his crate as a safe space and goes in willingly, but will howl and cry while his person is away. For sleeping, Zeus is content in his crate with the door open or, if invited, in bed at night with his person
Zeus is an excellent house guest with wonderful manners. He will rest at his foster mom’s feet or in his crate while she works and has never had an accident or chewed inappropriately. If he smells delicious food in the kitchen or trash, he might explore and be tempted to counter-surf, but he stops immediately when corrected. Zeus may jump onto the couch or bed, but will get down as soon as he’s told.
He absolutely loves spending time outdoors with his person, whether playing in fields or walking through town to greet the locals. Zeus walks well on a leash, but does get excited and pull when meeting other dogs. He rides quietly in the car for both short and long trips, though he experiences motion sickness, which shows up as excessive drooling; however, he bounces back quickly once he’s arrived.
According to his former owner, Zeus enjoys baths, is cooperative at the groomer (allowing handling of his ears, feet, and body), and behaves well at the vet. Like many Springers, he’s happy to splash and play in water—be it a baby pool, puddle, or stream—and sometimes carries a plush toy around. He shows no resource guarding with food/toys and is kind and friendly with everyone in the household. Zeus eats in the kitchen twice a day and loves treats such as boiled chicken, peanut butter, and turkey bacon.
Zeus would do best living in the country in a home where he can be close to his family and have another dog(s) for companionship. A single-person household may not be ideal, as he struggles with being left alone. He thrives on outdoor play and would be content spending hours outside on a farm—either playing, sleeping, or simply watching cows, horses, birds, squirrels and other wildlife.
Zeus will quickly capture your heart without the use of lightning bolts!
