Update 10/04/08:
There are tons of things to be said about Zeke. He is such a sweetie! He has been doing much better with the resident cat since he has been in his foster home. Initially he did chase the cat, but his family has learned it is more out of following their 1 year old Springer that has lots of energy. They really do think that Zeke would be fine with a cat now that they’ve had more time to observe his behavior. They doubt Zeke would bother a cat if he didn’t have another dog initiating the chase. His foster mom actually had Zeke and the cat sitting on either side of her for about ten minutes and they were just sniffing each other :))!
Zeke is a very sweet Velcro dog that loves his people. He also listens very well when you give him a command. The vet and every person that has met Zeke all state he is a very well-behaved dog. He has been around kids as young as seven and he is great with them. The younger kids actually prefer Zeke over the resident dog to play with because he is more easygoing and doesn’t jump up. Zeke has grown accustomed to the high energy ESS and they play well together. On occasion, Zeke will still let him know that enough is enough.
Zeke is a treasure………don’t miss the chance to bring him home!!
Original:
Zeke and his housemate Zoe 4 came to MAESSR from Pennsylvania when their dad tragically died and her mom could no longer take care of her due to allergies.
This big boy is completely housebroken and goes into his crate freely when he wants his private time. He is crated when the foster parents are at work. Zeke is very calm and low key. He responds to sit and stay and is learning to fetch toys. He walks well on the leash and enjoys going for long walks at a slow pace. When it is time to go for a ride in the car, Zeke is the first in line and he is a good passenger. He loves attention from his people! In fact, he can get a bit jealous when he is not the dog getting attention. Zeke’s foster parents have a ten year old son and Zeke took to him right away! Zeke’s human foster brother enjoys playing with him and has walked him a few times by himself. Even though Zeke is 66 lbs., he doesn’t really pull on the leash.
Zeke chases the resident cat so a forever home without cats would probably suit him best. He had some early issues with the resident male ESS but they seem to be getting along better. The resident male Springer is only a year old and is a high energy boy. Zeke may just be annoyed by this young bundle of energy. Zeke marked when he first came to his foster home but there have been no other marking episodes since then. He reportedly handles grooming very well. His foster mom has easily been able to touch his ears and look into his mouth. Zeke readily allows her to take a toy from his mouth when she is playing with him. The resident Springer does not have the same privileges, and Zeke has let him know!
When he gets excited, Zeke will bark at humans but not excessively. Occasionally, he will jump up when someone walks in the door. Zeke sits by his foster family at mealtime, but he does not beg and he does not counter-surf. In the yard he is not into digging and he does not try to jump the fence. Zeke is a pretty easygoing dog. His foster family is trying to slowly increase his activity because he is overweight. When they first got Zeke, he wouldn’t even attempt to fetch a toy, but he is becoming more interested in playing now.
This mellow boy will make a great addition to some lucky family!
