Updated 1/13/07: Xia and her litter mates are just a few days short of 2 months old and their individual personalities are becoming quite apparent. Xia is also a standout when it comes to beauty. She is the only liver and white puppy of the litter and has beautiful blue eyes. She has a face to make you melt and knows it. Xia is incredibly playful and started off as the bully of the bunch. However, she has calmed down a little bit as the other dogs have caught up with her, size-wise. Xia enjoys chasing the cats, chewing on anything that dangles and running around in the backyard with her siblings. She will chew on shoelaces, string and socks, so her foster parents keep an eye on her when she’s running around the house. Xia loves to be picked up and will quickly fall asleep with her nose tucked in under your chin.
Xia, like her siblings, is teething and really enjoys the crunchy puppy food. She uses the puppy training pads in the house…….she then enjoys chewing them up. As a result, her foster parents are quick to replace used pads as needed. She is responsive to her name and knows what “no” means. Xia enjoys any kind of chew toy but does love something that she can tug on and drag around. Xia is unafraid of the vacuum, washer, or other noisy appliances. More on this little looker as she continues to grow.
Original: In mid-November, 5 springers came into MAESSR’s care when a breeder chose to downsize her breeding program. One of the dogs, Zoe, was near her due date and delivered a litter 4 days later. Names were needed for Zoe’s new family and, in the spirit of the season, it was fitting that a Thanksgiving theme be used. Zoe’s family now includes Tom Turkey (no one could resist the lighter side of this choice), Unity (in the spirit of the original feast), Winthrop (after a man who drafted the first Thanksgiving resolution) and Xia (Greek for welcoming).
In just a few days Xia and her litter mates will be one month old. The 4 puppies and their mother are doing great. Zoe is eating regularly now and producing plenty of milk to keep her growing babies fed. By their 3 week weigh-in, each pup had grown to 3 pounds or more which is quite big for their age. At that time the puppies were still nursing full-time but will be ready to start on solid food soon. There’s nothing as entertaining as baby puppies swimming in their first real food!
Of course, everyone has their eyes open now. They’re all walking and even starting to play with each other. This is when their individual personalities begin to emerge and Xia is no exception. Xia, easily spotted as the only liver pup, is the boldest of the puppies so far and seems like a bit of a clown. His foster mom jokingly says that she’s starting to look like an actual puppy instead of a doggie-like sausage. She’s already mighty cute and getting cuter every day.
More on this little gal as she takes on shape and personality.
