Update 04/13/11:
Wyatt continues to do well. Over the last few weeks, he’s seen his vet several times and has made some great health gains. His treatment for Lyme disease is complete and he has lost a couple of pounds. He still needs to lose a few more but, with the benefit of corrected thyroid levels, that should happen easily. Wyatt’s teeth are shiny clean now and he has recovered nicely from a surgery to address some suspicious lumps. One of the lumps was diagnosed as being a mast cell tumor, grade 2. This news sounded a bit scary until his vet explained he feels Wyatt has a good prognosis.
One of the most endearing things about Wyatt is that he must have something in his mouth when he greets his family. The best things are toys, but he has brought one of his foster dad’s heavy work boots or shoes or a couch blanket! He never chews these offerings; he just needs something to offer his people.
Care needs to be taken when trimming Wyatt’s nails. He’s not real keen on it, but he is tolerant. He must have someone nearby or he won’t eat, and, if the resident dogs walk by while he’s eating, Wyatt will walk away. To be sure he eats, some human attention needs to be taken at mealtime to see he gets his share.
Since returning to foster care, Wyatt hasn’t met a stranger, including his family’s grandkids, ages 4.5 and almost 2. The vets and groomers love him!! He has even warmed up to his foster dad; at first Wyatt seemed wary of bearded men, but he and his foster dad are fast friends now unless his foster mom is home.
Wyatt is a gem and ready to greet a new family with gently offered gifts. Wouldn’t you just love to come home to a welcome like that every day?!?!?
Update 03/18/11:
Wyatt returned to MAESSR when his owner, a longtime MAESSR volunteer, passed away.
Oh the superlatives that Wyatt receives from his foster mom! Apparently he is: awesome, a lover boy and a perfect house guest. Does it get any better than this? Wait! There’s more: Wyatt has complete run of the house since he displays no untrustworthy behaviors – no accidents, no inappropriate chewing. He gets along well with the resident dogs and cat, and loves to meet new people! His favorite activity? Snuggling on the couch with his foster mom. At night, he snoozes on a dog bed close to his foster mom’s bed.
This super-sweet senior is undergoing some veterinary work to make sure he’s in tip-top shape. Though asymptomatic, Wyatt did test slightly positive for Lyme disease and is being treated with a short term course of meds. A lump on his chest will be removed and biopsied after blood work and x-rays are completed. He will also have a dental cleaning. It was determined that his thyroid levels were slightly low, so Wyatt has begun taking an inexpensive medication to correct it. His foster mom has put him on a diet, so the combination of diet and thyroid correction should help Wyatt shed a few pounds quickly.

Wyatt is a dog that any adoptive parents would love to have in their home. He’s good with other dogs, kids, strangers, everyday life and in public. He has impressed his fostering family as being at ease in all situations and very well balanced. He really only has one fault………you want to hug him and pet him all the time!
He loves to be outside, but Wyatt comes right back in when called. He’s very gentle and careful with the 11 year old, little female Brittany in his foster home. He loves to have his belly rubbed and being brushed by the 5 year old grandson who visits. Of course, Wyatt also loves treats, his toys and riding in the car. He’s quiet ’til someone comes into the house without knocking or ringing the doorbell. Then he barks. What an excellent watchdog!
Wyatt was relinquished to MAESSR’s care by a family who had owned him since puppyhood. The demands of jobs and a toddler in the home left little time for Wyatt of late, but he had been trained in basic obedience, crating, and enjoyed full run of the house when they were home. He learned to play fetch with a frisbee and enjoyed swimming at every chance he got. When he began making a game of chasing his own shadow, they decided he needed a home in which he could get more exercise of all kinds.
Besides being beautiful, Wyatt is a great example of what a springer should be! At 42 pounds, he’s not a big springer, but he definitely has a big heart and lots of love to give. To know him is to love him!!!!!!!
