Original: At 78 pounds, Woody is a lovely house guest who obviously appreciates the finer things in life, things like food and chewies to name a few. The thing he appreciates most though are people. His social skills are excellent. He will sit politely to be petted and listens attentively to all the nice things people say to him. While he is excited to meet new people, he would never jump on them. He talks to them! Woody is so well mannered but can be exuberant at times, so his foster mom feels that any children he would live with should be 8 years old or older.
Woody’s had a great time meeting new people with his foster mom, including the groomer and the vet. He felt so good when he left the groomer’s that he practically skipped out! Woody says he enjoyed all of it except the poking and prodding at the vet, and even that was ok because the people were so nice about it.
The vet left Woody with the thought that 68 pounds would be a good goal for him. He walks well on a leash. In fact, he’s quite a pleasure to walk. So, he’s benefiting from regular walks to help him with his weight and to work off some of his energy. Once he’s in better shape, he might like agility because he’s so smart. He has a good start on his basic commands and is a quick and willing learner.
Woody has a great sense of humor and will turn anything into a game. He loves to do a little dance with his squeaky toy when his foster mom comes home…and any other time he thinks things are dull. He’s curious, too. Other dogs countersurf. Woody has to know what’s on top of every desk and table in the house. Of course, you never can tell where you’ll find something good! Woody knows if countersurfing were an Olympic sport, he’d have a gold medal! Needless to say, his foster mom is working with him to dissuade such achievement!!
Riding in a car is another things that Woody is terrific at doing. He sits in the back seat and looks out the window on one side for awhile. Then he moves to the other side of the back seat and looks out the other side for awhile. So cute! He sleeps on his own bed bedside all through the night and is definitely not a morning dog. Instead of him waking her, his foster mom gets to ease him out of bed if the day is to start before 7 AM. Woody does love furniture and people beds but will get down when asked. Because he’s so good in the house, his family hasn’t seen a need to try him in a crate.
With people, Woody is quite comfortable being the center of attention. With other dogs, it seems as if he may wish to be the alpha dog. He will grumble at times although shaking a can of coins at him or saying a stern “No” will stop this behavior. Whether Woody lives in a home with other dogs or by himself, having a human who is comfortable and confident as his leader will help bring out his best manners.
He’s a cute, funny dog. He was placed with MAESSR by his family when he showed fear of a new baby as it began to crawl. Short of this, Woody doesn’t seem to be afraid of anything. He loves being adored and can be an adoring companion. He could be a perfect partner for a senior who walks daily or anyone who likes to sleep past 7 AM. If this sounds like you, you need to meet Woody!
