Winston is a field Springer found at a shelter in Virginia He is a puppy and everything goes in his mouth, including foster mom’s hand. He also has a bad habit of jumping up on her. This youngster is a sweet, smart boy with a lot of energy. He is challenging and willful with a strong character–fearless and inquisitive.
His foster home is on a farm and Winston is the first foster to run into the pasture of cows and try to play with them. He has not been kicked yet!! Lucky Winston!! After the first three days Winston was allowed off lead and stayed around the house and property. He comes when he is called. He will try to visit a neighbor’s house, but, when called, comes right back. He is not crated and when left alone will get into newspapers and tear them up. Winston likes drinking from a hose and also the cow trough. His foster family will introduce him to other dogs, cats, kids and swimming in the near future.
Winston is not allowed on furniture or the bed. He sleeps in the bedroom on the floor or his doggy bed. He likes men and is good with his foster dad who has dementia. He jumps up to see what is on the counter but does not counter-surf. During the day he will lie next to where his person is sitting. Although he is still not housetrained, when he starts moving he goes out and will do his business. He loves his toys but his favorite is the plastic milk jug to play “keep away” with outside. He is always outside with his foster mom and will amuse himself by running around with a toy or milk jug.
Winston will chew on shoes and will usually walk with a shoe in his mouth in front of mom before chewing. He is given either another toy or treat for giving up this shoe. This handsome fellow has had some training. He will shake hands and knows “sit.” He retrieves balls but does not always give them back . Walking and healing on a leash outside are works in progress. He is challenging and needs constant teaching.
Note that MAESSR will require his adoptive family to take their new family member through a series of obedience classes within 90 days of adoption. MAESSR only places puppies – even older ones like Winston – in homes that are committed to training and bonding with their pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience. MAESSR believes the decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment.
He was a good boy at the vet’s and has allowed foster mom to trim his nails—maybe the first time ever.
Winston is high energy and needs a home where someone can spend a lot of time training him. Once trained, he will make an excellent dog . As a field Springer boy he would make a great hunting dog with his fearless, high energy. He needs an experienced owner who will train and love him. Winston’s strong character is very challenging.
