Update 06/14/2022: “With sadness, Winston was sent to the Rainbow Bridge.”
Although Winston was physically healing from his infections and his eye surgery and was not in pain, he bit again, this time seriously.
MAESSR DOES NOT place a dog with a bite history into any of its potential adopters’ homes. Instead, the biter is humanely euthanized for the safety of all concerned. With sadness, Winston was sent to the Rainbow Bridge.
Original: “Winston has been a cuddly teddy bear since he has been in his foster home.“
This handsome boy ended up in a shelter in Maryland after he bit his previous owner when she reached to pet him. His foster mom believes that was because she startled him. His left eye has entropion which is when the eye lid rolls under so the hair from the eyelid is rubbing the eye. In Winston, this had caused an ulcer on his eye and was extremely painful. The eye was swollen almost completely shut so it is doubtful he saw his owner reach for him.
Winston will be having surgery to correct the entropion eye in a week or so. He should feel much better. He also had a really bad ear infection in his left ear and an infection in his right ear in addition to a urinary tract infection. These issues are being treated, and MAESSR’s newest boy should be feeling like a new dog before long.
Winston has been a cuddly teddy bear since he has been in his foster home. He loves attention and being close to people. He has been excellent about having the eye meds applied twice a day. His foster mom has also tried pushing him in many areas to see what type of response she would get, and he has been great. He walks well on a leash and likes to ride in the car. He gets along well with the other dogs in his foster home and even plays with them at times.
Typical Springer, Winston will counter-surf if given the opportunity. He is housetrained, and, although he is not fond of a crate, with his good house manners, that should not be an issue.
MAESSR is requiring one series of obedience classes for Winston to be completed within 4 months of adoption. This will aid with bonding and have the added benefit of helping Winston be the BEST Springer boy he can be. Keep an eye on his webpage to follow Mr. W.’s recovery from his surgery and to learn how his personality develops once he is pain free. You go, Winston!!!
