Original: As is often the case, Winston came into MAESSR’s care through no fault of his own. He was relinquished by an owner who started with him as a puppy from an AKC breeder. Now, with four children in the home under the age of 13, it seemed as if Winston was not getting the quality time that he needed with his people.
Winston moved from a home busy with people to a home busy with other springers. He now lives with two resident springers and one other foster springer, all of whom he gets on with well, except a female who is inclined to be an alpha dog. Winston takes a gentlemanly approach with her and simply keeps his distance. He is like the third musketeer with the other two and hangs with them even when off leash. He barks for his dinner, imitating the other dogs, and allows his foster dad to remove his food dish without issue. He sleeps right next to his buddies when they’ve worn themselves out from running, swimming and playing.
Excellent house manners come easy for Winston. He has free run of the house and doesn’t take advantage by settling on furniture or disturbing anything. His foster dad has shared that Winston does like to carry shoes around the house, much like toys, and has a pair of “favorite” old slippers. To accommodate this little comfort for Winston, his foster dad has learned to keep other shoes in the closet. It was advised by Winston’s previous owner that he did not like crates, and given his good behavior in foster care, there has been no need to change his mind.
When the doorbell rings, Winston is the first to the door and greets visitors with a supersonic tail wag and his toy of the moment. He knows his basic commands. When he wants his foster dad’s attention in the office, Winston sticks his nose under his dad’s mouse hand and lifts it up. What a sweetie!!!! Because of his wonderfully steady and gentle temperament, his foster dad feels that this field bred boy would be a good candidate for therapy dog training. Whether he begins a new career or continues as a full time companion, Winston will thrive as long as he gets a return of time from those around him. Got some time?????
