Update 04/05/11:
Through no fault of his own, Winchester was returned to MAESSR by his adoptive family. He walked into his new foster home and was thrilled to be greeted by the two resident Springers and another foster Springer. Winchester has lots of energy and was happy to participate in games of tug, chase, and fetch with the other dogs. Much to Winchester’s delight, there were also three resident cats at his foster home. Much to his dismay, they were not interested in a game of chase, no matter how much barking he did to egg them on. A few moments after his first feline encounter, Winchester surprised his foster mom by making the decision to leave the cats alone. It wasn’t until later that evening when she pulled a broken-off kitty claw out of Winchester’s nose that it all made sense – ouch!
Winchester walks very well on a leash. If he does pull, it doesn’t seem like much since he is a petite boy, weighing in at about 40 pounds. In the car, Winchester travels well. On the drive to his foster home, he sniffed around a bit and then made himself comfortable on the backseat. For brief rides into town, Winchester is content to lay down with the other Springers in the back of the car. His latest trip was to the dog park where he made many new friends. He greeted all of the dogs, from a tiny Yorkipoo to a hundred pound Bully mix with excellent canine manners and made sure to say hi to their humans as well!
If he is not playing with the other dogs, Winchester enjoys patrolling the backyard for birds or squirrels. He prances around with his head and tail held high, hoping to catch an animal scent in the warm breeze. This boy really enjoys his outside time, but he is also happy to come inside. He enjoys spending time with his foster mom lounging in the living room. Like most Velcro Springers, he longs to be close to his people both day and night. If his foster mom is out of sight for too long, he will come and find her. At night, he is happy to sleep in a crate near his foster mom and the other dogs. With these active days, Winchester doesn’t mind sleeping in. Wouldn’t you like to bring him breakfast in bed?
Original:
After Winchester was picked up as a stray in rural Pennsylvania, the shelter staff contacted MAESSR and this handsome two year old was quickly placed in a MAESSR foster home.
Winchester is a wonderful boy who loves everyone he meets. He has had many fun adventures since becoming a MAESSR boy, such as flying Springer Air and meeting lots of friendly people. He has handled it all as if he had always lived like this. Landing in a foster home where there are plenty of other Springers to play with, Winchester is enjoying every minute! Right after he arrived in foster care, he had two marking accidents in his foster home, but has done very well since then. As well as being housetrained, he is crate-trained, but prefers to be with his people at night. Winchester walks fairly well on a leash and rides well in the car.
Initially quite the counter snooper, Winchester would take every opportunity to scope out the edges of the counters. He is quickly learning that is NOT acceptable and is taking redirection well. Winchester does not seem to know any commands, but he is very eager to please and is receptive to training. He will do well with a family that will dedicate some time to obedience training where he will learn the commands that will make life safer and more pleasant for his new family and him.
Winchester is a very affectionate and playful young Springer. This combination is going to make him the star of someone’s life!
