Original: “He seems to mimic what he sees the other two dogs do, which includes ringing the “potty bells” when he wants to go outside.”
Wilson came to MAESSR when his Virginia breeder passed away.
He was very scared and nervous when he was first picked up by his foster family. He was given a good bath with a flea treatment and then spent some time wrapped up in a blanket in his crate where he felt comfortable and safe.
It took him a few hours before he wanted to eat or drink, but he ate some food when fed by hand. He was kept separate from the foster family’s other two Springers, but Wilson appeared to immediately relax when he saw them. He stayed in a separate room segregated by baby gates where the other two dogs sat on the other side. His foster mom and dad took turns sleeping next to him at night, so he was not alone which helped comfort him. Each day, Wilson made significant strides in relaxing and getting used to his new environment.
Wilson knows his name, is housetrained and has had no accidents in the house. He seems to mimic what he sees the other two dogs do, which includes ringing the “potty bells” when he wants to go outside. Wilson does not currently know any commands like “sit” or “down.”
He has become a very good eater and while not really interested in regular dog treats, Wilson LOVES cheese and literally starts dancing when he sees it. All three dogs are fed separately and bowls are picked up when they finish. Then they can join each other again. Wilson needs to gain some weight per the vet’s recommendation to get him to about 45 lbs. or so.
Wilson is very good about getting brushed, groomed and having his ears cleaned and had no issue being handed off to the vet who is still practicing COVID restrictions and not allowing people inside the vet clinic.
Wilson is scheduled to be neutered on August 29th, and, despite 3 male dogs in the house, has not done any marking. He does try and mount the other 2 male dogs in the house, which the vet said will stop or significantly reduce once neutered. The resident dogs have been very patient with these antics!
At first Wilson did not know what to do with toys but after watching the resident dogs, he caught on quickly and is a big fan of squeaky toys and stuffed animals. He does not seem to be too interested in balls. Wilson is a dog who is happier around other dogs. He is very playful with the residents and seems very puppy-like in his demeanor.
One very interesting quirk of Wilson’s is how he drinks water. He is a very messy drinker, but this is because after he drinks, he fully submerges his snout underwater several times so his mouth and ears are constantly wet.
Wilson is a very sweet boy, with a medium to high energy level (at times) who craves the presence of people and dogs. Wilson has been an absolute joy to watch adjust and then thrive in his new environment. He will bring joy to some lucky family.
