Original: Willie first came into MAESSR’s care in May 2006 and was soon adopted. Due to family issues in his adopted family, Willie has come back to MAESSR. His adoptive owners wanted Willie to have an opportunity to lead a carefree, happy life.
Willie is a typical young Springer — very playful and energetic. He is not shy with meeting new people or dogs and is always happy! He does play rough with dogs and playtime quickly escalates to rough-housing. He likes to mouth when he plays but his foster mom is breaking him of that. When playing, Willie might be too energetic for an older dog or a younger child. Willie would enjoy a canine companion closer to his age who enjoys playing and burning off some of that Springer energy!
Willie loves chasing. He will chase anything within running distance if he thinks he can catch it. Squirrels, rabbits, birds, chipmunks, and probably cats need to be wary when Willie is outside playing! A fenced yard will be a must for this Springer boy. Willie also loves to go hunting in the tall grass and then slopping in cool creeks. Ah, the good life!
Willie loves to ride in the car and sits still in the back. He also loves to play with balls and squeaky toys. He knows how to drink from a hose and he plays in the sprinkler like a kid. Willie knows “give me your paw” and “sit” and he will “come” when called. His foster mom is working with him on “stay.” Willie needs to be trained to walk on a leash. At first, he would pull “like a Mack truck” according to his foster mom, but she is proud to say he is getting better.
Willie is given the run of the house during the day and at night with no problems. When left home alone, Willie doesn’t bark or show signs of stress. Willie has no housebreaking issues and is not frightened of lightning. He is not crate trained. On his first day in foster care, he was crated at night and he was fine. After that, he cowered like he was being punished. So as not to associate the crate with punishment, his crate door remains open and Willie can go in as he pleases.
Willie is very smart and will turn in to a really good dog with a little training. Willie will be great for anyone who is looking for a dog to compete in agility or any K-9 competition. He has a strong winning drive. When Willie runs, he runs his fastest. When he jumps, he jumps high and lands gracefully. He carries himself with confidence and grace.
This Springer boy is looking for someone to be his best friend for life. Do you need a best friend?
