Meet Willa, a bouncy, young springer! This puppy was pulled from a shelter in southern West Virginia and appears to be about 5 months old. She was brought to the shelter by a concerned citizen who saw her running free for several days. While at the shelter this sweet girl was very scared and shy, but this is not the case in her foster home. Willa is a very energetic delight and her foster family is enjoying her greatly.
In her foster family there is a young child that is nine and Willa is very good with him. She’s also residing with three other springers, both male and female, and one golden doodle. Willa is doing great with all of them and they with her. She loves to be in the same room and right next to the other dogs. She is especially growing close to one of the young male springers and follows his lead in everything.
Willa seems to love being in a home and she has taken well to being spoiled. She is learning housetraining very quickly from the resident dogs. She’s showing no desire to try and reach counter-tops………and until she grows, she wouldn’t stand a chance of reaching anything anyway! At mealtime she has shown no aggression or guarding issues with her food. She doesn’t get into the trash but does relish time on the bed with her people when invited up. Willa is chewing only on toys and bones given to her and has not picked up things when she is told “no.” At night and while her foster family is at work, Willa sleeps in a kennel. She also travels well in one and didn’t make a peep on the long ride to her foster home.
Grooming is likely new to Willa. She was a 5-star wiggler when getting her first bath but didn’t seem too frightened of the experience. It will take some time for her to fully understand how wonderful being brushed can be and that her ears must have regular attention too.
Willa is working hard on the “come” command and is learning quickly. She is also trying to understand what a leash is for. It’s seems likely she’s never had training on one so her family is starting her on this. On the first few tries, Willa did not want to stand up with a leash on but each day she’s doing better. When Willa is frightened, she will roll over on her back or crouch down at loud noises. Her family is also seeing some submissive urination, but that is diminishing and will likely disappear as she settles and becomes a more confident girl.
MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs under 1 year old to enroll their puppy in an obedience class within 60 days of adoption.
Willa is going to make a great pet with some proper training and lots of love! This dog loves to play, loves any toys, loves to fetch balls and loves to just run laps! She’s also very, very quick! She loves to have attention and will make a great family dog! If you’re ready for the hands-on experience that goes with growing a puppy to adulthood, consider little Willa. You will fall hard for her when you meet her.
