Original: “Wesley was so excited after surgery. He could SEE!!!!”
Poor Wesley. He lived outside at his Pennsylvania home. He had such large “cherry eyes” that he could not see around them. The sun and dirt had dried out the cherry eye part of the eye and it was extremely painful for him. The owners finally surrendered him to the local shelter. MAESSR had worked with this particular shelter a few years ago regarding a couple of other Cocker Spaniels. The shelter staff was so happy with the home that MAESSR found for those dogs that they wanted us to help Wesley. Naturally the challenge to help this sweet boy was accepted.
A good friend to MAESSR helped get Wesley from the shelter and held him until he could be moved to a foster home. She gave him several baths and trims to try to get rid of all of the fleas and matting. She was his “ANGEL.” When Wesley arrived at his foster home he already had an appointment scheduled to be neutered and to have his bilateral prolapsed eyelids corrected. When the vet examined him she also determined that he had “dry eye.” This is where the eye does not produce enough tears. It could not be determined if it was true dry eye or if the large cherry eyes were not allowing the eyes to close and produce enough tears. Poor Wesley also had infections in both ears and whipworms.
Wesley was so excited after surgery. He could SEE!!!! He jumped on the sofa at his foster home which actually scared him because he had never done that before. Wesley was enjoying being able to see, but the cherry eyes slowly returned. The skin had been too ulcerated to hold the “fix” for the cherry eyes. The decision was made to work with his eyes and medications to try to get them in better shape prior to performing the surgery a second time.
Wesley is an absolutely wonderful patient. He stands very still for his various drops to be put in his eyes. He does expect a treat immediately afterwards. If both eyes receive drops, then he believes he deserves TWO treats….and yes, he can count!
The day finally came for his second surgery. It was successful. Wesley’s eyes look pretty good now. He does have “dry eye” and has to have drops put in his eyes twice a day to encourage greater tear production (more treats!)
The down side to Wesley’s second surgery was that a mild heart murmur was detected. He was started on a medication to help the heart perform correctly. Wesley will have to continue the twice daily eye drops and the heart medication for the rest of his life.
Wesley is one of the sweetest Cockers his foster mom has met. He is so good for everything that has to be done to him. He rides well in the car and walks well on the leash. And he LOVES to play with toys – he always has one in his mouth when he is running around. Additionally, Wesley is good with other dogs and he is crate trained and housetrained. What a fantastic guy!
If you are looking for a loving teddy bear to spend your time with, look no further than Wesley. This sweetie is so deserving of a loving home and family to spend his life with. How about opening your heart and home to Wesley this holiday season? He will be the most precious gift you could possibly receive.
