Update 04/11/08:
Vaughan is back home recuperating from his neutering and a dental cleaning. His blood work, normally done for seniors prior to anesthesia, showed no problems. He is a little stiff at times, but this senior is in great shape for his age.
With improved health, Vaughan is feeling much better. He is showing signs of wanting to challenge the alpha male in his foster home but still gets along with everyone and will play with bones to entertain himself. He loves his walks. When walking with a crowd, Vaughan needs a collar that dissuades pulling but when walking alone, he hardly pulls at all. He is still a talker, very affectionate and loves attention. He’d love a family who will listen to all he has to say and will love being on the other end of his leash for lots of spring outings!
Original:
Vaughan was found as a stray in east central New Jersey by a good Samaritan who took him in, got him cleaned up, tried to find his owner, and contacted MAESSR when no one reported him missing.
Vaughan is a very sweet, active senior who is in excellent health. He is responding well to antibiotics for an ear infection and he will get a long-needed dental cleaning when he is neutered in the beginning of April. Vaughan’s vision appears good, and he has slight hearing loss. He gets along great with the resident dogs – two neutered males and a spayed female – as well as with the resident ten-year-old boy. Vaughan likes to play keep-away with tennis balls and bones.
Vaughan is housebroken and has excellent house manners. There is no garbage diving or counter surfing for this boy! Vaughn is not crated when his foster family is out; instead, he has free run of the house and is reliable. He doesn’t get on the furniture and if someone puts him there, he gets down right away. He rides very well in the car settling in to nap or watch the scenery. Vaughan also loves to go on walks, so much so that he will pull on the leash although he respects a prong collar. Vaughan hasn’t been tested off-leash.
Vaughan is very vocal making all kinds of noises to communicate. He will also bark, but only at people in the yard; otherwise, he whines, moans, and makes comically loud sighs. Vaughn doesn’t seem to know any commands which may be due to his being partially deaf or just due to very selective hearing. He is responding to some hand signals, but not consistently.
Watch for more on Vaughan as he settles into his foster home.
