Updated 1/13/07: At 2 months old, the personalities of Unity and her litter mates are becoming quite apparent. Unity is a quiet and incredibly sweet little girl. She is definitely the calmest of the litter and just wants to be loved on. She is the smallest of the bunch which has made her a bit of a target for picking on by her bigger siblings. She takes it at first but eventually gets up enough energy to join in the chaos. She certainly can play when she really feels like it. Unity is a bit more apprehensive about exploring the backyard than her siblings, but she will run around and play when she finally gets some coaxing. Ultimately, she just wants to spend time in your arms.
Unity, like her siblings, is in the first stages of housebreaking. She uses the training pads about 50% of the time and, with consistent and continuing guidance, improvement will follow. Unity enjoys crunch puppy food and has fun with her squeaky toys. She is completely oblivious to the existence of the resident cats in her foster home and is not intimidated by the larger dogs. She is also not afraid of the vacuum, washer, or other appliances. More on this sweetheart as she grows.
Original: In mid-November, 5 springers came into MAESSR’s care when a breeder chose to downsize her breeding program. One of the dogs, Zoe, was near her due date and delivered a litter 4 days later. Names were needed for Zoe’s new family and, in the spirit of the season, it was fitting that a Thanksgiving theme be used. Zoe’s family now includes Tom Turkey (no one could resist the lighter side of this choice), Unity (in the spirit of the original feast), Winthrop (after a man who drafted the first Thanksgiving resolution) and Xia (Greek for welcoming).
In just a few days Unity and her litter mates will be one month old. The 4 puppies and their mother are doing great. Zoe is eating regularly now and producing plenty of milk to keep her growing babies fed. By their 3 week weigh-in, each pup had grown to 3 pounds or more which is quite big for their age. At that time the puppies were still nursing full-time but will be ready to start on solid food soon. There’s nothing as entertaining as baby puppies swimming in their first real food!
Of course, everyone has their eyes open now. They’re all walking and even starting to play with each other. This is when their individual personalities begin to emerge and Unity is no exception. Unity seems very laid-back and easy-going. She is a take-it-or-leave-it kind of girl. Things like having her toenails trimmed hardly faze her at all. His foster mom jokingly says that she’s starting to look like an actual puppy instead of a doggie-like sausage. She’s already mighty cute and getting cuter every day.
More on this little gal as she takes on shape and personality.
