Troy has settled in well with his foster family. He welcomed a new foster brother this week with the same friendliness he shows all dogs. He has tried to get the new springer to play, but has been unsuccessful so far. Troy\’s largely mellow nature allows him to accept this and snooze right alongside the new boy.
Just as he was ready for offering, Troy came down with a fairly common eye infection. It required short term meds and an ointment several times a day. He has been very good about letting his foster mom put the ointment in and loves getting his pills in a dollop of peanut butter. As soon as he has his clear beautiful eyes again, he will be ready for his forever family.
Original:
Troy is a strikingly handsome, tri-color springer. He has tan eyebrows and tan at his tail, as well as tan cheeks and freckles on his legs. He is lightly built and lean, and is carrying good weight at 41 pounds. Troy came to MAESSR from a Brittany rescue group who met him in a shelter and recognized his breed.
When he first arrived, Troy seemed wary of his foster mom and distant from the dogs in the home. He was not fearful but chose to spend a lot of time in his crate with the door open. Over the next 10 days, he warmed up to all. He will play with his springer, foster brother and is gentle with the two small, senior residents. He is learning about treats and will sit for his alongside the others. Food can be removed from him midmeal without any trouble.
He now trusts his foster mom and enjoys being petted and having his belly rubbed. He allows grooming and ear cleaning, but he isn’t keen on having his nails trimmed yet. He has visited the town park several times and accepts petting from friendly strangers but doesn’t seek it out. The noises and smells of cars, ball fields, playgrounds, and skateboards don\’t alarm him. He just prefers to keep his nose to the ground, checking for food wrappers that may not be empty!!
Housebreaking has come easily for Troy. He hasn’t had an accident for several days. He sleeps in a crate bedside with the rest of the family. During the day, he is crated for 2 half day stretches while his family works. Troy has learned his name and is just now starting on basic commands. He is making nice progress on his leash work, and only pulls to check out a smell. He will counter-surf if a smell attracts his interest but hasn’t tried for the lidded trashcan.
On the first night in his foster home, Troy made quite an impression. When he was let out into the exercise pen with the other two foster springers, he showed them how to scramble the 4\’ chain link fence. He made it look so easy! He did a lap or two around the house and then sat quietly on the hillside. After a bit, he came down and got lots of praise and hugs from his foster mom. Troy is a sweet, mostly quiet, and mellow dog, but his foster mom also thinks he may have hidden talents. Agility, anyone??
