Update 10/03/11:
All this “Tramp” needs now is a “Lady” to love!…such a bright expectation for Tramp as he began settling into his foster home. Disappointingly, as his foster family and other volunteers assessed his emerging behavior, it became certain that he could not be offered for adoption.
Original:
Just like in Walt Disney’s Lady and the Tramp, MAESSR’s Tramp initially had no home, but he later found love, safety, and happiness in his wonderful foster home. Soon, he will find his own special forever home. Tramp came into MAESSR’s care when some good Samaritans in rural Pennsylvania found him wandering the streets. When no one came forward to claim him, MAESSR was contacted.
In the beginning, Tramp was very scared, dirty and shy. With a good bath and the reassurance that nobody was going to hurt him, he slowly warmed up to his foster mom. Tramp is the true love bug that every Springer has inside of him. This boy loves to be at your feet or on your lap – it doesn’t matter where as long as he is near his humans.
Tramp is currently residing with several other dogs – both males and females – and also some resident cats. He has had no issues with any of them and he is even found sleeping side-by-side with one or two. This mild-mannered boy has shown no food or toy aggression at all and when given a treat, he will gently take it from your hand.
Tramp’s house-manners need a little refreshing, but they are not horrible. Living on the streets for an unknown amount of time probably caused him to forget the etiquette of living inside. Tramp likes to counter-surf (or counter-observe) and is very clever about it. He knows that he is not allowed to put his feet on the counter; so, if a human is close by, he will place his feet on his human companion and check out what might be of interest on the counter! He has never taken anything, though. Considering he was living by his wits, Tramp may need a refresher course in trash diving, too, although he has not been given the opportunity to see what treasures are in the garbage can in his foster home. Although Tramp is 90% housetrained, he was just recently neutered and still feels the need to mark his territory now and then. His foster mom is working on this with him and he is improving daily.
Tramp is crate-trained but prefers to have free run of the house with the other dogs. He is a good boy who is not destructive, but until he is 100% housetrained, he will be crated at night and when his foster mom is at work. When his foster mom leaves for work and Tramp kennels up in his crate, he is very vocal for about 10 minutes before he settles down. At night he whines for a few minutes and, if he is told to “go to bed,” he usually quiets down quickly.
When he first came to his foster home, the in-home spa treatment he received was not wasted on Tramp; he really seemed to enjoy his bath! Soon, he will be going to a professional groomer; so, watch for his new haircut and before-and-after photos! This good boy has also been to the vet where he behaved very well despite his fear. When it comes to going for a ride in the car, Tramp is always the first in line. He loves car rides! He is the perfect passenger, too, sitting in the back seat and watching the world go by! Tramp also enjoys going for walks and sniffing everything that he can, especially birds. He does pull somewhat on the leash, but because he is not very heavy, he does not pull very hard. Training and/or walking with an easy walk harness or a gentle lead could easily take care of that. Tramp just gets excited. A smart boy, he knows the basic commands “sit, paw, down, and off.” His forever family may want to take his to obedience classes to work with Tramp on further sharpening these skills.
