Tom was turned into a crowded shelter in New York with his brother, Jerry. Once contacted by a MAESSR volunteer, the shelter staff was happy to work with the rescue to get both boys neutered and into foster homes quickly. At his initial foster home, Tom had a few issues with the alpha male, but he is getting along well with the two females and a fussy male terrier in his current foster home. He’s really easy to have around, just hanging out with the resident dogs, usually with a stuffed animal in his mouth or nearby. He sleeps quietly crated at night, is completely housebroken, and knows sit and stay. He most likely could be trusted off leash because he stays near his humans when outside and comes when called.
Tom shows no separation anxiety at all, though he’s openly happy to have his foster folks come home, wagging and circling coyly for pets or bumping them with a stuffed animal. He rides well in the car and will walk or jog easily on leash alone or with a second dog, although in usual Springer fashion, he tends to veer for scents along the way. He’s been exposed to children and takes their hugs and petting with good nature. He ignores terrier growls, usually incurred when he doesn’t quite get the concept of personal space and comes trotting by with a stuffed toy in his mouth without realizing he’s even bumped another dog. He has free roam of the house during the day and evening, just getting crated at night so he doesn’t come up the stairs to hang out next to his foster folks’ bedroom door.
This handsome Springer isn’t too big, probably about 45 pounds, and is always grinning and looking for ways to make someone’s life happier. He’s willing to be active, but inside while his foster mom works, he’s usually parked on the cool kitchen floor until something happens. Don’t let his chronological age of eight fool you, he’s going on three in attitude!
