Update 03/07/10:
Toby is a cuddle bug whose tail never stops wagging!! He just loves life and everyone that he meets. He has that Springer puppy exuberance and is always on the move. He has settled into the routine of his foster home with very little problem. He is being crate trained. Toby currently eats and sleeps in his crate. He is also in his crate when there is no one available to supervise him. Toby willingly goes in his crate when told, “Toby, kennel.” He has also started going in without being told while his meals are being prepared.
As a puppy, he requires supervision. Toby has an inquisitive nature and has to investigate everything. While investigating, he has a habit of chewing on things including electrical cords, throw rugs and almost anything else that he can put in his mouth. When found with a forbidden item, he will willingly surrender it to his foster mom. His all-time favorite thing to chew on is sticks out in the yard. Toby can be found running around the yard carrying a stick at all times. He also loves the snow and flinging it about with his nose.
His foster mom has been working on basic obedience with Toby. He knows “sit,” “down,” and “touch” and is very reliable with these commands. He will generally come when his name is called. “Wait” and “stay” are currently being worked on. Toby is not so good with these commands yet because he is so inquisitive and always ready for the next adventure. He has also grown accustomed to walking on the leash. Of course, he does not heel but will now allow his foster family to put the leash on without any resistance.
His housetraining is a work in progress. Toby is able to make it through the night in his crate without a problem. He has also been crated for 7-8 hours while his people are at work. He has never had a mess in his crate. When out of his crate, he is watched closely because he will occasionally forget himself and urinate in the house.
Toby is attending a dog daycare with his foster sisters. He is learning his puppy manners and gaining invaluable doggy social skills. The daycare staff just loves him and has been showing him off to whoever comes to the facility. To be exposed to so many different people is great for this little guy. He is always anxious to meet and greet someone new. He accepts the corrections provided by the big Springer girls when he commits a puppy infraction. After being corrected, Toby shakes it off and goes on his merry way.
Toby does well riding in the car. He sits on the floor behind the driver’s seat and patiently waits to reach his destination. He has been to the vet’s office and was a good boy for the exam. Toby did have two infected ears which, with an ear medication, have cleared nicely. He is very good about allowing his foster mom to clean his ears.
This is an extra special boy who is very smart and learns quickly. He loves to spend time with his people. His quick learning and love of people will help when his new family takes him for the required obedience classes. He is very eager to please. Toby is a sweetie who would love nothing more than to squirm his wiggle butt into your heart and home!!

Once again, a litter of needy puppies has come into MAESSR’s care, this time from Maryland. These wee ones, born on December 1, were surrendered by the family that bred them in an effort to assure Springer-loving homes for each pup. Over the next few weeks, their foster families will oversee completion of their vetting. They will also start the puppies on some basic obedience and house training. Socialization with people and other pets is underway, and yes, a generous measure of cuddle time and spoiling will be lavished on each warm, little bundle of fur!
There are 3 females and 2 males in this litter, all are liver and white, and, each is absolutely adorable. Like his brothers and sisters, Toby is off to a great start. He is all puppy!! Toby enjoys playing with toys, snuggling, and belly rubs. He continues to spend time with his foster sisters who are helping him learn his doggy manners, and, he is working with his foster mom on basic obedience.
More news will come as unique personalities emerge and each puppy makes progress. To set each puppy up for a lifetime of good manners and a deep bond with its adopting family, adopters will be required to take puppies to obedience classes. Bragging rights when your pup gets the hang of a loose leash walk are guaranteed!
Laughs along the way are guaranteed too! Wet puppy kisses– a sure thing! An occasional wet puddle– likely! A comforting sense that the puppy started this spring is growing into a best buddy– that’s called a perfect match! If you’re perfect for a puppy, watch for updates. Once they’re ready, placing them won’t take long!–
