Update 10/28/12:
Titan returned to MAESSR when his adopting family found that two small children and a lively young pup were too much to handle. Poor Titan was not receiving the attention and training that a young dog desperately needs.
Back in MAESSR’s care, Titan’s foster family says that he is doing fabulously. He has had no accidents in the house and is responding well in his new environment. There are three resident dogs in the home and Titan has fit right in with them. This gentle boy wants nothing more than to be by his foster parents’ side.
While Titan is an otherwise healthy boy, he has a ruptured salivary gland which needs to be repaired. After recuperating from the surgery, Titan will be ready for his forever home. If you have the time to spend giving this very sweet boy a loving home and gentle guidance, you’ll have a friend for life!
Update 07/22/12:
It’s amazing how resilient this sweet, little boy is proving to be in his foster home. Titan is still skittish but is slowly coming out of the big shell he has built up around himself from the abuse he endured in his youth. He is very mellow and laid back. He does not bark. His foster family feels in a patient and loving home, he will make someone a very good companion.
Titan has finished his basic vetting requirements and is a very healthy springer. All he needs now is a committed family to help complete his new beginning!!
Original:
Life doesn’t always start off pleasantly for some puppies and Titan knows that firsthand. In March, he was found in Pennsylvania as a stray by a Good Samaritan. This neglected, starving, frightened young Springer had a too-small collar embedded in his neck. Many vet visits, much love, and good food later, Titan is starting to enjoy life. Unfortunately, his Good Samaritan family already has three dogs and a cat, and the city in which they live allows just four animals per family. Allowances are made for a rescue, but the time limit is six months. Knowing they could not permanently keep him, the family contacted MAESSR, knowing we would find a wonderful new home for Titan where he would be loved and cared for all his life.
Titan is a very sweet little boy although very, very shy and scared of many things new to him. He is good with the resident dogs and he is learning to play with them. In his first foster home, he just ignored the resident cat, but was frightened of the children’s pet rat! In his MAESSR foster home, Titan thoroughly enjoys the company of the three year old niece who is with him for six hours a day. He just loves her! When she eats, Titan sits beside her, begging like crazy. He does not steal food from her hands, though; he is a good vacuum cleaner picking up whatever she drops! What a little beggar! In his first foster home, he also lived with young children- three, five, and eleven- and he enjoyed them as well. Titan has come a long way in meeting strangers. When he first came to his previous foster home, he was very skittish around strangers and would stress when they touched him; now, Titan is doing really well when meeting new people. This attests to the loving care he has received since March!
Soon, Titan will have his first vet appointment where he will receive the rest of his vaccinations and be neutered. The vet will also check out why Titan keeps scratching his itchy hind end. Since he is frightened of new things that make noise, Titan has some grooming issues. He is afraid of the clippers and cries when he hears them. His first foster mom had to use scissors to cut all the mats from his coat. Now, he’s fine with getting his ears cleaned but pulls away when his nails are trimmed, so the vet has to trim them.
Housetrained, Titan sits by the back door when he has to go out. He still has submissive urination, though, but he has had no accidents in the house. Titan is learning about being crated; with some human encouragement, he goes into the crate. At night, he sleeps on the living room floor. Titan has lovely house manners. He does not counter-surf or get into the trash, but he does get on the couch.
Titan now knows the commands “sit,” “come,” and “down.” He is still learning about proper leash walking and right now he is quite a puller. Although Titan rides nicely in the car, he needs to be carried to get into it. Titan does jump on his people for love and his foster family has been smothering him with love! With all of this love and positive reinforcement, Titan is coming around and is playing a little. Around people he knows and loves, Titan is a very mellow Springer!
With the help of his two loving foster families, Titan has come a long way after being grossly abused in his first year of life. He needs a forever family willing to spend time with him, be patient with him, and to love him. He will reward them by being a loving, faithful companion. Could you and your family help to bring Titan out of his shell?
