Tessie II is a true Dixie Darling, eager to please with her southern manners. She and her litter-mates Bonnie, Scotty and Malcolm II came into MAESSR’s care through a Tennessee shelter.
Although Tessie was not too happy about her long car ride from Tennessee to her foster home and voiced her concerns, she quickly turned into a happy pup once she arrived! Inquisitive and full of energy, she checked out her fenced yard and bricked patio where she now enjoys her meals al fresco.
During her first night, she preferred to sleep on the couch with her legs stretched and belly up, securely ensconced between her foster mom and 6-year-old pal. After a few nights, she was moved into her crate where she expressed concern again, but soon came to enjoy the security of her own private space. Now, she peacefully sleeps the night away. When home alone, she prefers her crate to the freedom of a full kitchen. Tessie loves a good frolic with her foster family and will follow them around the yard. She likes a good workout, galloping the length of the property and back during bursts of energy. She also likes lap hopping during TV time!
Tessie is doing fairly well with housetraining although she still has accidents. Leash training is progressing also although she still is prone to pull on the leash during walks. Because she is so eager to please and she enjoys her treats, it’s likely her habits quickly will change. Tessie remains cautious around big dogs that she passes during her daily walks.
When the neighbor’s cat comes for a visit and rubs against Tessie to make friends, she pays little attention to this “funny-looking dog with small ears.” Tessie prefers her two-legged friends! She gets along well with the children in her foster home, ages 3 and 6, and likes to run and cuddle with them. She will chase a ball and bring it back, but teases the kids by refusing to let go. That too is likely to change with enough treats.
Tessie did well during a Memorial Day barbecue with many children and adults doting over her. She took all the attention lying down and was a bit shy. She is a submissive girl, but is learning to greet new people with more enthusiasm.
When she is by herself, Tessie likes her chewies and squeaky toys, but she will troll for kid toys as well. In that puppy chewing stage, she also likes shoes, wooden steps, and furniture legs. Her foster family is discouraging this inappropriate chewing and is substituting appropriate items for Tessie to chew on. When she gives them her “I’m sorry” eyes, all is forgiven.
Tessie is looking for a family to love for a lifetime!
