Update 12/22/08:
Tequilla is doing extraordinarily well, a tribute to what lots of TLC and good veterinary care can accomplish in a short time. He has healed well from his surgery in early October and, though his family will need to keep a watchful eye on the lump sites, no recurrence is expected – yeah! He tested negative for Cushing’s disease which affects the endocrine system – more good news!! And to finish his overall health improvement, this boy has slimmed down from 56 pounds when he returned to his foster home to about 45 pounds. Small wonder Tequilla feels so much better.
He especially enjoys his morning walks and is ready to settle with a family who will treasure him spending the rest of his days with them. What more could a boy hope for this holiday season! Best wishes, Tequilla!!!
Update 11/09/08:
Tequilla returned to MAESSR’s care through no fault of his own. After years with his adoptive family, they encountered personal health issues that prevented their ability to keep him.
As with some transitions, Tequilla was very depressed, tired and felt hopeless when he was returned to his former foster family. He is doing much better now.
Tequilla has had surgery to remove a lump. It went well and was found to be non-cancerous as were 2 other lumps that were biopsied. He is deaf now due to an ear mass and infection. With the surgery and subsequent antibiotics finished, he is feeling pretty good now.
He is beginning to enjoy life again and has lost a little weight to a good level. Tequilla loves affection and gets lots although he did not quite trust it at first. He has had enough uncertainty and confusion for a while and deserves some stability again. He has become much more cheerful, social and outgoing in the past few weeks and wants to enjoy more of that.
His foster family has been calling this boy Zeke now but he doesn’t know it. He just goes by his intuition of them and hand signals. He’s a great guy and will love having a family of his own again in due season……….
Original:
Tequilla loves to run, so when his owner moved to a townhouse with no yard, she surrendered him to MAESSR. He is very well marked, clean and healthy with beautiful, clear eyes and has a nice, free way of trotting and running. At his foster home, there is a field where he is allowed to go out on his own. At first he just ran and ran around the field, delighted at the freedom and space. Shortly, he began to play “coy” and would come close to his foster dad when it was time to go in but then dodge away. When his savvy dad ignored him and went inside, Tequilla laid on the stoop, looked around awhile, and then whined to go in. Now that he knows he can go out anytime, he comes right to his foster dad and goes in when he does.
Tequilla is just an all around wonderful boy. He has a nice personality and is used to being treated well. He is housebroken and has very good house manners. He doesn’t jump up on people, trash pick, countersurf, beg, dig, chew, or bark excessively. He had an obedience class as a puppy, knows basic commands, and does well on leash. He was crate-trained then too but has not used one in a very long time. He did well with run of the house while his owner was away for 4 to 8 hours at a time.
In Tequilla’s foster home, he gets along very well with the resident springer and is good with cats. He has lived with a teenager and reportedly was good with the neighborhood children, as young as infants, in his original home. He’s gentle and affectionate. He’s good at the groomer, loves to swim and play ball, and will snuggle during thunderstorms. His foster dad feels he is very smart and has a lot of “class” and “presence.” Having space to continue running will keep this dog happy and having a dog who is so pleasant to share a home with should make his adopting family very happy too
