Updated 8/20/07: Teddy is recuperating from a surgery that extracted his two top canines and two lower teeth which were very rotted. A blocked salivary gland was also removed. He is on pain medication for this extensive work in his mouth. His eyes and ears are already showing improvement from the removal of all the infection that was part of his problem. Though a bit discomforted right now, the long-term benefit to Teddy’s overall health with this care is certain.
This tender boy is very attached to his human and will follow until he is exhausted. He is adapting to some alone time with the rest of the pack in his foster home but still prefers constant human companionship. More on Teddy to come.
Updated 8/7/07: Teddy was turned back to MAESSR as he was having some adjustment issues with his adoptive family. Teddy has separation anxiety which was exacerbated in his adoptive home due to the fact that he was an only dog. His symptoms are less severe in his foster home where he is one of the pack. For this reason, he should not be considered for a home without other dogs.
It’s just as if he never left. Teddy has settled back into his foster home and the companionship of the resident dogs. He has the same great loving personality and looks wonderful since he has put on some needed weight and his coat has grown out so nicely.
Teddy will be visiting the vet to consult about medication to help reduce his anxiety and an update will be coming. If you have resident dogs who would welcome Teddy as much as he would be heartened by them, keep an eye on this sweetie!
Original: Teddy came to a shelter in southern New Jersey as a stray so his previous history is unknown. This is a handsome springer with great lines and nice markings. He had a full coat but, due to mats and yellowing, he was shaved down. Teddy has had several baths and is great on the grooming table. In time, he will be a handsome boy with a beautiful new coat. He weighs 46 pounds and definitely prefers table food over his kibble. His foster mom is working to get him to eat his food without table scraps to entice him.
Teddy went to the vet and received a good bill of health. He will, however, have some much-needed dental work done when he is neutered. He was wonderful at the vet’s office when her staff poked and prodded him all over. He was an A+ patient.
When around people, Teddy is so laid back. He follows his foster mom around her office and is good with all new people and dogs he meets. When left alone for any time though, Teddy is very anxious. He is currently being placed on medication to help with this. He may need this assistance for some time to come, until he settles in and becomes surer that he has a forever family and will never be on his own again.
Being crated is not Teddy’s favorite thing. To ease his training along, his foster family is slowly working with him to just become comfortable in a gated area. Teddy must have spent some time in a pen since he does pace in circles to calm himself. It is hoped that the medication will also help him with this, to relax and enjoy his new life.
Teddy has many wonderful qualities. He has no issues with food or being touched. He rides well in the car and jumps in whenever the door is open, always ready for an outing. At his foster home, Teddy has been fine with three female springers and one male, mostly ignoring them to settle in next to “his” human. Teddy is learning “sit” and “stay” and he walks very well on and off leash next to his foster mom. He is housebroken. Teddy has tried to counter surf a bit but only to see what his foster mom is working on. At night he settles into his bed next to his foster mom’s bed and sleeps soundly until he hears stirring. Then, he is up on the move, making sure he keeps his human in sight.
Teddy would do best with an older family that has a slower pace of life and is home most of the time or one that owns a business where he is welcome to greet customers and make sure things run smoothly. As long as he knows his human is in sight, he will settle down and sleep. Do you have room in your life to snuggle with this Teddy?
