Update 01/03/12:
As we have all heard of in the past, there is no greater love of a human than that of one’s four-legged canine companion. Susie was an absolute testament to this. Although her body did not resemble that of a 14 year-old dog and her vet was initially amazed at how healthy she was, the loss of her owner truly broke her heart.
There would be no love great enough from another human to replace the love of Susie’s owner, nor would there ever be a more devoted and loyal canine to a human. With all of this taken away from her, Susie literally gave up her will to live and her body began to fail. Knowing the heartache and pain that Susie was going through, the kindest and most humane thing to do for her was to set her free……to meet her long-time dad at the Rainbow Bridge. Though a MAESSR girl for only a short time, she will be in our hearts forever……………
Update 12/01/11:
Susie qualifies for MAESSR’s Home for the Holidays program. For dogs in this program, adoption fees will be waived through the end of the year. Help a special Springer’s wish come true – welcoming one into your home may be the most heartwarming gift of this holiday season!!
The treatment for Susie’s eye is complete and the infection is gone. To keep her eyes comfortably wet and clear, her foster mom is administering tear drops daily and feels this will be a must for Susie in her adopting home.
Susie’s appetite has increased tremendously and she is now a little piglet! She also has begun taking a much needed supplement of goat’s milk twice a day to help her gain weight. Susie now weighs in at 24 pounds but still needs to pick up at least another five pounds or so. This weight gain needs to be gradual, though, so as to not upset her tummy.
This little prima donna currently has her days and nights mixed up – oy vey! Miss Susie likes to sleep all day and wander around the house at night, mostly to get into mischief. This tiny little girl has gotten so comfortable in her foster home that she now counter surfs and trash picks. The resident dogs are very quick to let her know that this will not be tolerated by tattling on her. When her foster mom reprimands her, Susie ‘pretends’ that she can’t hear. However, she is NOT deaf because she sure can hear the treat jar opening!
Susie has met some children and was very nervous around them, so it would be best if she was in an adopting family with grown children. Or, Susie may just prefer to be with another senior human so they can enjoy their golden years together in peace and harmony. She should be ready soon to snuggle up on those cold wintery nights ahead in her forever home. Keep an eye out for her to become available.
Original:
Susie came into MAESSR’s care when her elderly Maryland owner became very ill and unable to care for her. Susie had originally gone to live with the owner’s granddaughter and her family, but their home was much too stressful with two large dogs and two very active young children. The granddaughter then thought it best for Susie to find a much more relaxed, quiet home and turned to MAESSR for help.
Although Susie is just a tiny little girl only weighing 23 pounds, she is very demanding and takes no nonsense from any of the other dogs in her foster home even though they are much larger than she is. If the other dogs are playing too roughly or carrying on, Susie starts to bark and lets them know that this behavior is not tolerated by her.
Susie likes to ride in the car and go for short walks; however, she gets tired very quickly and needs to take a nap afterwards. Cooperative for grooming, Susie does not mind having a bath, having her ears cleaned, or having her nails clipped. Good girl!
While Susie was at the vet, she met many new people who could not believe she was 14 years old – not a gray hair anywhere on this little girl! The vet is treating her for eye infections and recommends she gain weight.
Watch for more on Miss Susie as she regains her health and puts on some needed weight.
