Susie came to MAESSR by way of a shelter where she was relinquished when her owner could no longer care for her. At her foster home, Susie was clearly happy to be back to living with a family, wagging her tail if someone so much as glanced at her, and settling in easily with the resident dogs. Susie sleeps in her crate quietly at night and has been completely housebroken since coming into foster care, standing by the back door and whimpering slightly when she needs to go out. During the day, she hangs out with the resident duo of another Springer spaniel and a terrier, as well as a female foster terrier, and gets along with all of them.
Slightly underweight, Susie has a shiny coat and is otherwise healthy. She came in with a swollen face with a cut on it, possibly from another dog at the shelter, but is healing nicely. She loves to look for birds or other wildlife and will trot along nicely as a running partner, though her leash manners still need some work. She pulls, at least initially, when going for a walk but is learning to settle. She knows sit, but trying to get her to shake results in her dropping and rolling upside down with her tail wagging and tongue lolling. Susie gets fed separately from the resident Springer as she will mumble under her breath if the other dog approaches while she’s eating. Humans sticking their hands in her bowl don’t produce a reaction, as they could be adding food.
Reasonably low energy inside, with a long loping gait and alert eyes outside, Susie would love to have a fenced yard to patrol and another dog for company. She gently approaches anyone she meets and invites them to pet her. At the dog park, she strides around with confidence, checking things out, and greeting owners for a quick head rub before following the other dogs around. In her foster home, her good nature rubs off at least temporarily on the resident Springer, making her more outgoing and friendly on neighborhood walks. Susie loves people. Though she shows no signs of separation anxiety, she does want to be in the same room while her foster folks are up and about. She absolutely loves car rides.
Susie is one of those dogs that make a fostering a pleasant experience, and she’s sure to make adoption an even better experience for her lucky forever family.
