Update 01/21/10:
Another of MAESSR’s special seniors is doing very well! Susie’s medication is effective in treating her Cushing’s disease. Her foster mom is gone from 7 AM until 4:30 PM for work and there are no house issues at all. Susie is thrilled to get outside to relieve herself, for sure, when her mom arrives home, but she is now reliable for full days.
Susie gets along well with the resident dogs and enjoys meeting new dogs. She acts much younger than her 13 years, chasing squirrels, birds, imaginary critters in the tall grass and generally romping in the woods. It’s hard to imagine she was a city dog. She loves to be outside and walks well on a leash or off. One just has to remember she is “hearing” challenged; she gets focused on a scent and loves to follow it. She’s a doll of a dog and enjoys each and every day!!
Original:
Susie is a very sweet girl who lived her entire life with a grandmother and mentally challenged son. After the grandmother’s death, Susie tried city living with a granddaughter but that didn’t work out well. So, MAESSR was contacted to find a new loving home for this sweetheart. Despite her age, Susie does not have any problems with her joints and she is quite spry giving the squirrels in the yard a run for the money and often treeing them. She has been diagnosed with Cushing’s disease, though, for which she receives medication. She drinks a lot of water because of this, but can go 4 to 5 hours before she must have a potty break. She is both housetrained and crate trained although she is not crated in her foster home since she is completely trustworthy with lovely house manners. When the doorbell rings, she will bark; otherwise, Susie does not dig, chew, jump on people, counter-surf, or beg for food. What a good girl!
Susie gets along well with the resident Springers in her foster home and routinely plays with them. In her recent past, she has lived with a cat harmoniously, too. A very affectionate, loving girl, Susie loves to cuddle and is fond of people of any age. She is good at the groomer and has no problems having her feet handled and her ears cleaned.
Although she has had no formal obedience training, Susie knows the commands “sit,” “stay,” and “come” and also will “shake” for a cookie. She walks well on leash, can be trusted off leash, and rides well in the car. Susie loves to play with stuffed animals and squeaky toys and also loves rawhide chips. A water dog at heart, Susie loves the water and always enters the pond or creek near her home to go wading.
This lovebug would be a wonderful addition to any family– especially one with other dogs for companionship. Senior Springers are truly a blessing. See for yourself!
