Update 02/03/10:
Sunny is doing well. She is a very energetic, playful puppy. She has learned to negotiate the stairs inside the house which was funny at first because she had no idea what to do. She has learned “sit” and “down” over the last week. Also this week she has decided that she is not fond of the crate and has actually started to mess in it over the last couple of days. Her family is working with her and trying to change her feeding schedule to see if that helps at all. Prior to the last couple of days, she was good for up to 5 hours in the crate with no messes. She still does not sleep through the night and is up at least 3 times throughout the night to go outside. She’s still learning that potty breaks are to be outside, not inside, but she’s a puppy and accidents are going to happen.
She loves to chew on rawhides and has 2 toys that are her absolute favorite. Sunny also thinks that sticks are the coolest things in the world. She chewed one up for her family in the house on Sunday. She loves to chase tennis balls. She loves to chase after the resident dogs, although the “not so pleasant” beagle wishes she wouldn’t.
Sunny is starting to respond to her name and will come to you after a few calls. She does very well with the 2-legged kids in her home, although being a puppy and not having the understanding that all food is not hers, she will try to take food from them. Her family has been working with her to “sit” and “stay” away from them while they are eating. She’s done fairly well, but then sometimes forgets. Again, she’s a puppy!
Sunny is a quick learner and will definitely need a family that is willing to work with her on the obedience training. As with all MAESSR youngsters under one year of age, Sunny’s adopting family will be required to take her to an obedience class. The benefits that come from a pup and her family learning the basics together in a group setting is simply invaluable.
Something else Miss Sunny has learned is that it’s fun to chase the resident cat. This cat is so used to it and just plays along, although at some point Sunny may come across a cat that doesn’t think it’s very funny. When it comes to the end of the day, Sunny loves to be held and snuggled. She rests her head on your shoulder which is just too darn cute and very refreshing after a long day at work. Yes, another real plus of having a puppy in the family!
Original:
Everyone loves puppies, so there is always lots of excitement when MAESSR brings little ones into its care. This time is no different. A litter of 6 Springer mix babies were dropped at a shelter in South Carolina, all in need of care and homes, so MAESSR is helping. Since they were without names, lots of suggestions by volunteers and members of the main MAESSR group list were made over the days before their arrival. With many great and fitting themes to pick from, names bringing to mind South Carolina won out, so with 4 females and 2 males, they are Breezy, Dewey, Myrtle, Pawley, Sunny, and Surfer. Springer Air sped them north and each pup is now in its foster home.
At approximately 10-12 weeks old, each puppy is ADORABLE beyond words. Like her siblings, Sunny is off to a great start in her foster home. Ever since her family picked her up, she’s been a little ray of sunshine. She does very well with the 7 and 3 year old children in the home. She is excellent in her crate. Sunny does not sleep through the night yet. She is pretty much like clockwork and is up at 1:00 to go potty. Then she’ll sleep until around 5:00 and want out again. It’s sort of like having a newborn in the house all over again!
More news will come as unique personalities emerge and each puppy makes progress. Soon they will be ready for loving families who will take them to obedience classes, be their new playmates and soon their very best friends. Check back soon! This won’t take long!
