When Storm’s family had to move to an apartment for financial reasons, they were not able to take him along and relinquished him to a Maryland shelter. They contacted MAESSR and it wasn’t long before he was safe and sound in a foster home.
Storm is a typical Springer pup! He is 43 pounds of energy and absolutely loves to run around in the yard chasing rabbits, balls, toys or his fellow foster dogs! He is not great with bringing toys or balls back, however. He would much rather that his companion chase after him in a rousing game of catch me if you can! He will drop a ball or toy so that it can be thrown again, but it just may not be anywhere near the person who is supposed to be doing the throwing! Storm absolutely loves being outside and enjoyed the recent snowstorm. It would only have been better if he had had some company running around the yard in the rainy snow! His older foster brothers felt it was much better to be warm and secure inside on the couch!
When greeting new people, Storm is a little nervous. He likes to wait until visitors to his foster home settle down into a chair before approaching them. Once he is familiar with a person, he will come and loves to jump up to greet them. His foster parents are working on curbing his enthusiasm when they come home. He is just so glad to see them that he loses his self-control! Storm does not appear to have had much training, although he does know some basic commands. He pulls on the leash, so he needs some work in that area. Storm was very curious when his foster parents’ infant grandson visited. He wanted to come close to check him out, but was still very gentle and cautious. He would absolutely love to be in a home with older children who could play and roughhouse with him. He is on the small side with the shorter legs of a field bred springer and loves to hunt and chase any animals he sees.
Storm has done well with all the dogs he has met. He is not food aggressive, although he does eat his food very quickly. He is being fed with a special bowl to help slow him down during his meals. He will destroy any soft toys, especially plastic squeaker toys. He is a big chewer and loves to get that squeaker out! He has also destroyed tennis balls and several old rope toys that he found in the toy basket. Although he shows no mercy for toys, Storm hasn’t chewed on anything inappropriate, even when his foster parents have left their shoes within reach. Good boy, Storm! Storm’s absolute favorite toys are ones that bounce when they are thrown.
Housebroken, Storm goes to the door and whines when he needs (or just wants!) to go out. He sleeps downstairs with his canine foster brothers in the family room at night and when his foster parents are out. He does get up on furniture and will counter-surf if something up there interests him.
If he wants attention, Storm will let out a little whine. He will also turn his head as if to say, Why don’t you understand me? Storm rides very well in the car. He lies down in the back and rests quietly until the car slows down. At that point, he jumps up to look out the window. He is very curious as to why he is in the car! Storm is not a barker or digger; for him, it is all about the thrill of the chase! If you’ve got a good arm and are ready to add an active boy to your family, Storm may be just the boy for you.
