Update 10/24/10:
All the latest news on Mr. Stanley is good, no, make that great! He has finished an antibiotic and his urinary infection is over. He is small at 40 pounds but is healthy and at a good weight for him.
Stanley is such a sweet boy and it shows in his puppy-like face. He continues to get along with other dogs and has now had some experience with cats. Recently he ran over to a neighbor’s cat and barked at it. When the cat hissed at him, Stanley ran home! Can we say he seems OK with kitties?
Beyond his barking at the cat, Stanley does not bark, nor does he get on furniture or surf counters. He is great with the 4 year-old in his foster home when she walks him. During the day Stanley stays on the deck with the other dogs and is great inside the house with no accidents or chewing.
His foster mom keeps a leash at the front door and lets him out on it during the day. But, in the mornings before breakfast, he is let out with no leash because he comes right in with the other dogs. Stanley gets to spend some time at a family farm and is generally good there too, but temptation does abound. He will wander if chasing squirrels. He always comes home but, to be on the safe side, his family puts him on a leash there at times too.
Stanley is such a very good boy, loves his new life and never wants to be a stray again. Can you help him out?
Original:
This sweet little 5 year old, black and white boy came from a Virginia shelter as a stray. The shelter staff named him Stanley Steamer, but his MAESSR foster family calls his Stanley.
Wherever Stanley had lived in the past, he learned some house manners there because he is well behaved in the house. Housetrained but not crate trained, he signals when he needs to go out. He does not bark, get on furniture, jump on people, chew on inappropriate things, counter-surf, or get in the trash. Inside, Stanley is a couch potato but does enjoy running on his foster family’s farm. Although he likes to swim, he does not like the cold water at this time.
Although he arrived not knowing any commands, his foster mom is working with him on “sit,” “come,” “stay,” and “shake.” She reports that his is a quick learner! He also walks well on leash in a heel position. Stanley’s foster mom is also trying to teach him to play and fetch a ball; however, he does not seem to want to play with any toys. He just likes to hang out with the resident dogs outside on the deck and in the house. Nighttime finds him on his dog bed in his foster parents’ bedroom, sleeping soundly. If you need to go somewhere in the car, take Stanley along with you since he loves to go for a ride.
Even though Stanley is being treated for a urinary infection, he is in good health and is just awaiting results from his heartworm test. When he defecates, Stanley does some unique legwork. He lifts his left rear foot off the ground and does not put weight on it. Whether this is just an idiosyncratic behavior or a former injury has yet to be determined. Otherwise, he runs and walks just fine.
As well as getting along well with other dogs, Stanley is good with adults and children. When his foster parents’ four year old granddaughter visited, Stanley was wonderful! She just loved on him and he loved her right back, allowing her to walk him wherever she wanted. What a good boy, Stanley!
This sweet little dog will fit in perfectly in a family with children who want a low maintenance dog that is great with kids. Also, he would be right at home with retired folks who want a sweet Springer with whom they can share their golden years and entertain the grandkids at the same time.
Stanley has the most beautiful, angelic face with dark black eyes. One look at him and you will fall in love!
