Original: “He’s mellow indoors and out but always up for a walk – acting nothing like a senior.” Springy lived his entire life with a family in Pennsylvania. Although not aggressive, there was an incident when he nipped at the teenager in his home. This occurred when he was grabbed by the collar and pulled out from under a table to be put into a mudroom while the humans were out. This was deemed unacceptable and Springy was taken to a nearby shelter. The shelter called MAESSR quickly and Springy was soon off to his new life.
After a few days in a temporary foster home where he got a great grooming, Springy settled quickly into his current foster home. He gave a few sniffs to the resident terrier and hound and attempted to get the resident female to play on his first day.
For an older boy, Springy is in good health but he does need to shed a few pounds. His eyesight is good and his hearing might be a little off…or he could just be doing the “Oh, I didn’t hear you because I was busy” trick.
Completely housetrained, Springy stands by the door when he wants to go out and gives it a gentle scratch when he’s ready to come back in. Reportedly he’s used to an invisible fence. Since he really doesn’t like to be crated, Springy gets tethered during doggie meals so that he doesn’t finish off his dinner before trying to start on the food left unattended by the finicky resident hounds. If the humans are eating, he just settles under the table atop someone’s foot. A well-behaved houseguest, he doesn’t appear to beg and he doesn’t bother the garbage or check out the counters.
Springy is a little defensive about having his collar grabbed, so his foster folks are working with him on this. They will grab his collar in a friendly way on a regular basis just to let him know that it’s not always bad things that happen when it occurs. Their formula is: Grab + pat and back scratch = a good thing.
While his people are watching TV, Springy will flop on the floor nearby. He does enjoy it when someone joins him so he can put his head on a lap. This good boy just lies nearby on the cold floor while his foster mom works at home during the day. At night he sleeps soundly in his dog bed near the crated residents and sleeps soundly through the night.
During his first weekend in his foster home Springy took a three mile hike to a Little League car show and fundraiser. He was good on leash and gave a Springer grin and tail wag to everyone he met. He especially seemed to like the small children, sitting and giving a paw on command; but he was good with everyone there.
For car rides Springy gets tethered so that he doesn’t try to help drive. He loves to be out and about and meet new people. He’s mellow indoors and out but always up for a walk – acting nothing like a senior. This handsome guy will fetch toys and is not too concerned if another dog makes off with them. He doesn’t like to be gated away from the humans and will walk through the casually propped up baby gates. Once he’s done that, he’ll usually just flop somewhere and wait until it’s time to do something.
Springy the Springer is generally quiet; about the only time he’s vocal is if he thinks it could be breakfast time and the foster folks don’t seem to realize it. He’s not an early riser, it’s just once he’s up and the coffee is being made, he likes to remind people that, “Hey, we haven’t had a morsel since 6 pm yesterday!”
Springy is a friendly guy with a good attitude. Since he’s an older gentleman, he might do best without small unsupervised children. He’s handsome, playful, affectionate, and well-behaved. Because he settled into his new environment almost immediately, his foster dad told him on the first day that it was really too bad that there were three dogs living there. A fourth pup might just be one too many…or Springy would have found his forever home already!
This sweet boy is looking for that special family to call his own. Would you open your home and hearts to Springy?
