Spooky was found dodging cars in front of a convenience store. The owner of the store took him in to prevent his getting hit, and after a month-long effort to discover who his owner might be, the lady contacted MAESSR. He arrived at his foster home weighing 61 pounds, a reasonable weight for him, but he was adorned with dreadlocks. Removing them was a first step toward revealing the springer underneath and he looks much better already. His foster mom says he can only sit still for so long, but he will sport a complete “springer” haircut soon.
During his veterinary exam, a number of health problems were found. Some needed immediate treatment, including ear and kidney infections and the removal of two cysts. Spooky has a partial hearing loss which the vet feels is probably neurological. He can hear some sounds, but eye contact and hand signals help when asking him to come. When he’s sleeping soundly, it takes a minute to wake him, and he startles as if he was spooked. (Maybe that’s how he got his name?) He also has several tumors just under his skin, one of which bothers him, and needs further assessment by his vet.
Despite his temporary limitations, Spooky is a typical springer, being described as a real love bug by his foster mom. He loves to have his ears scratched, getting a melty look on his face and making happy noises to encourage more attention. He will happily sit on the couch and let people pet him. He has not met children in his foster home, but did well with youngsters down to 5 years old while he was staying with the convenience store owner.
Spooky’s favorite activity is to play ball. His tennis ball is his pacifier and he carries it around in his mouth, ready to play anytime he finds a pal. He will even bring it back and drop it at one’s feet for the next throw, over and over and OVER! Occasionally he will trot off to see what is happening outside his yard, so a fenced in “ball park” would be great for him. When out for a run with his foster mom and the resident dog, Spooky will follow the other dog for a while. Then he looks for his foster mom, and returns when she squats and motions for him to come. He loves being outside and is always ready to go.
Spooky likes rawhide chews and enjoys boiled soup bones in his foster home. He is housebroke, and is reportedly not a barker or beggar. He is leash broke and knows “sit.” When not sleeping, he will follow his foster mom around the house, just wanting to be close. She feels Spooky would do well with older children because of his hearing loss. And he definitely needs a family with some serious ball players. Could this be you?
