Original: “He doesn’t chew inappropriate objects, thinks a plain stick is just the greatest toy, doesn’t get in the trash and is learning that ‘No’ means he can’t put a foot up to see what that great smell is on the counter.”
Speckles and three other Springers came to MAESSR when their owner in Tennessee started having financial issues. He loved his Springers, but knew MAESSR would find them homes where they would be loved and cared for. After a short stop in Virginia for vetting, Speckles and his sister Rosie headed north to be fostered.
Initially shy and only wanting to hang out with the smallest foster, Speck quickly came out of his shell and now romps and plays nicely with his big hound foster sister. After one first day mishap, he’s been completely housetrained. He sleeps crated or tethered at night near the resident dogs. While he doesn’t mind a crate, he rarely goes in on his own. He’s not badly behaved for a nine-month old, but his one little trick is that he gets super excited when the people come home and wants to jump around and greet them whole-heartedly—puppy, puppy, puppy!! Young children might be knocked over in the excitement but then they’d just get licked in the face by a grinning Springer! He doesn’t chew inappropriate objects, thinks a plain stick is just the greatest toy, doesn’t get in the trash and is learning that “No” means he can’t put a foot up to see what that great smell is on the counter.
Speckles rarely barks, only when his foster sister does, and even then just an Arf or two. He is decent on leash, liking to stay near his human in case something in the big new world tries to get him. Decent in the car, he had one incident of up-chuck on the trip from Virginia to Pennsylvania, and by the time he met his foster mom, he just flopped in the back of the Jeep and slept the whole hour’s drive home.
Mr. Friendly hangs out while his foster mom works, usually in “Frog-dog” mode, occasionally upside down just for entertainment. He LOVES being brushed, and has to be pushed away if one of the other dogs is getting groomed.
This smart boy already knows “sit” and “wait.” He has no food or toy aggression. He’s not clingy but grins when he gets attention. Obedience classes will be in his future as MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs one year old and younger to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption.
What a perfect puppy love Mr. Speckles is. He’ll do best with a doggie companion and hopefully one who would play or at least might enjoy his “let’s run around the yard and be HAPPY” attitude. Fall leaves, winter snow, spring flowers—what fun lays ahead for this little boy and his furever family!
