Sparky is a black and white English Springer Spaniel estimated to be about 3 years old. He was rescued from a shelter in West Virginia and is very happy to be inside and be loved. He is a very timid Springer who needs lots and lots of love and attention since he was not given much of either in the past.
Sparky is working on being house-trained. He is used to being inside and makes no attempt to jump on the furniture and is content to sit (or lay) at your feet to be petted. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem that Sparky received much attention in the past. He makes no attempt to play or romp around but will follow you around quietly. Sparky is crate-trained and is used to being in his crate during the day when his foster family is at work.
Sparky was not neutered when he came to his foster family. He will make his trip to the vet this week to be neutered and become UTD on all shots. His coat was cut very short all over to remove the matted fur and burrs. He will have a beautiful soft coat when it grows back out. He is marked beautifully with a full saddle that is so black it looks blue! He did not like getting a bath at first but seemed to give in when he found out he couldn’t escape. He will let you handle his feet, ears, and mouth with no problems.
Sparky is very resource possessive. This probably comes from being neglected in the past. He will become vocal and growl if the resident ESS comes near when he is being petted or when he is eating. He has never made an attempt to become aggressive with the resident ESS, but still has not warmed up to him enough to socialize with him. Sparky gets along great with his seven year old two-legged foster brother. He also gets along well with the resident cats (he mostly just ignores them).
Sparky makes no attempt to countersurf or get into the trash. He has not showed any signs of being a chewer and does not jump on people or furniture (even when his foster brother tries to get him to lay on the couch with him!). He does not beg for food during family meals. However, Sparky has been very hungry before in the past and must be fed separate from other pets because he will eat all the other’s food before they have a chance to eat.
Sparky knows some simple commands: sit, stay, come. He does not go far from his foster mom and dad when outside and is very good on a leash. Sparky will cower if he hears a loud voice and responds best to soft-spoken commands.
Sparky is looking for his forever home that will give him life-long stability and love. He will make a terrific easy-going companion.
