Update 05/15/08:
Miss Sophie came back into MAESSR’S care on May 10. She was adopted by a family with a female cocker spaniel in their home almost a year ago. After several incidents of increasing intensity between Sophie and the cocker, the heart wrenching decision to return Sophie to MAESSR was made.
Sophie is now in a foster home with multiple dogs and she clearly prefers the male dogs. She wrinkles her nose at some of the more dominant females in the home. Her foster mom feels Sophie would do fine at a dog park with female dogs or in a similar type situation – she just cannot live with another female.
This beauty is an absolutely wonderful girl that is going to make someone VERY happy. Let it be you!
Original:
Sophie came to MAESSR as an owner relinquishment. Sophie is also a gorgeous girl with has a beautiful coat, graceful long legs, and plenty of kisses. She is a wonderful, affectionate young lady filled with what her foster mom calls Springer-tude. This means a typical Springer Spaniel attitude: high energy, confident, smart, affectionate and an all time Velcro buddy!
Sophie loves to run, play with her toys, chase her balls and, most of all, be with her people. She follows her foster family everywhere looking for a chance to play or an opportunity to cuddle. She only chews on her toys, she is housebroken, crate-trained, and has nice house manners. She doesn’t get into trash, she has learned in record time – less than one week – that the sofa and beds are off limits and that counter surfing is a no-no. Sophie is a bit shy when first meeting new people, but her foster family has been taking her lots of fun places with friendly people handing out treats and she’s becoming more comfortable in new situations. Sophie particularly liked going to the Snow Cone stand. Her favorite is a Spiced Apple snow cone. Yum! She is good in the car, but is protective in it when strangers coming near.
Sophie is great with the twelve-year-old daughter in her foster family and her friends. She does get a bit rambunctious and mouthy when playing with children, so she shouldn’t be placed in a home with younger kids. Her foster family is teaching her what the proper etiquette is for playing with humans. Sophie is good with the old, dog-savvy resident cat, but she doesn’t seem to realize the kitty does not really like being licked on her head. Sophie keeps checking to see if the cat will play with her, but all she’s gotten is a swat on the nose for her trouble. Her foster mom is sure Sophie would chase a running cat.
Sophie was excellent with all the dogs at the groomers and the dogs she has met on walks. She loves to play chase and wrestles with the resident English Setter who is a calm and submissive male. Sophie is, however, used to being the princess, and it was a bit hard for her to realize when she needed to back away from the resident dominant male Springer. Although Sophie has made large strides in understanding how to live in a multi-dog household, she would probably do best in a home with a young, mellow male doggy companion.
Sophie will do great with an energetic family that likes to be active with their dog. She will also do great in a formal obedience class to build her confidence and channel her energy. Is your family ready for Princess Sophie?
