For such a sleepy dog, there is so much to say about Sophie. She is a very easy dog to have around and is very little trouble. Her years of raising puppies have earned her the right to spend her days sleeping, usually wherever she wants. Perhaps because of her blindness and deafness, she always seems to be laying the middle of things, as if to make sure she is constantly in contact with her foster family. She has a very calming and relaxing effect on the family. Watching her sleep tends to make them want to take a break and lay down with her. It’s very pleasant.
Sophie’s foster family is particularly fond of her “talkative” nature, as she howls mostly at breakfast and dinnertime. There are no behavior problems to report with Sophie. She is not a trash picker, counter surfer, or beggar. She gets along well with the resident dog and remains neutral towards the cats. She does have to be let out on a regular basis, though; between four and five hours is the longest this sweet old lady can go without a bathroom break.
Besides her seeing and hearing, Sophie has no health issues. All in all, she is a very laidback, easygoing girl who is ready to bring her calm nature to a lucky forever family.
Original:
This beautiful female senior began her life as a breeding female for a breeder. She came to MAESSR from her subsequent owner who could no long take care of her. PRA disease has left her blind and she is now mostly deaf. As a result, she tends to mind her own business, but that does not mean she doesn’t enjoy her foster family’s company. She still knows where the family is in the house and insists on being around to make sure she gets her share of attention.
Sophie settled in quickly in her new home, needing about a week to learn the layout of the house and how to get up and down the stairs. She spends most of her time downstairs during the day, but will come up at night into the bedroom and sleep by the bed. Sophie is a talker, too. When she is in a playful mood, she will bark and “sing” in order to get attention. She likes having her big head scratched and really enjoys a good belly rub. She’s a real couch potato!
In general, Sophie is a very well behaved dog who leaves the trash and countertops alone in the house. When her foster family is not at home, she spends her time gated in the kitchen, but at night she is free to sleep where she likes. Once she’s settled in for the night, though, you won’t hear another sound from her and you’ll find her in the same spot in the morning! Sophie needs a leash on walks to help guide her along, but she is fine going out in the yard unleashed to do her business.
Sophie is generally indifferent to the other animals in the house, so a forever home for her could be with or without animals. She also does well with the kids in her foster family, ages six and nine, so her forever family could certainly have children in it. She just needs someone who will scratch that big head of hers!
Don’t think Sophie’s blindness is an impediment; she’s coping with it just fine. She is no different from other senior Springers Senior in wanting to share her love and appreciation with her adopted family. You will never regret bringing this very relaxed, laid back girl into your home!
