Original: Sommer was so distressed on the day her foster dad picked her up that she became physically ill. Sometimes, despite the best efforts to ease such moves, the change is difficult. She was relinquished to MAESSR by an older couple in Pennsylvania that had gotten Sommer at a shelter a year ago. Her earlier history is sketchy. At her vet visit Sommer was a very good girl and checked out well. She will need a booster in a few weeks and is very healthy.
Sommer’s foster family is finding her a very loving gal. This dog has lots of energy and likes to play. She will even toss her own toy and chase it to start the game. She enjoys long walks with her family. As with many younger dogs, there is room for improvement in her leash manners, but she does get better as each walk goes on. She has great table manners, never begs, and never counter surfs. She is housebroken and seems to go when she is taken out on a regular basis, without making any fuss for special trips.
Sommer has the run of the house all day and has only made one little mess in an apparent effort to get a good view out a window. At times when her family returns, Sommer does look as if she has been checking windows and shows some anxiety. She is not destructive but, for now, her family is making sure she is not alone for long at a time and they are working to reduce her stress.
The very few problems that Sommer has are with children and other dogs. She is slow to make up with children and sometimes makes it known that she doesn’t want to be bothered. For this reason, she will not be placed with children or in a home with frequent visits by little people. She was an only dog in her relinquishing home and is an only dog in her foster home as well. Sommer is protective of her area and doesn’t welcome other dogs who visit. If they pass the house, they are OK and, when she is out walking, she doesn’t give other dogs a second look. For this reason, this gal will be looking for a family that can offer her the opportunity to be an only dog.
Sommer is very pretty and very bright. She always listens and will stop what she is doing if she is being corrected. She is good on recall and will come, sit, and stay. She is good in the car, and, at this time, she has no crate training. Sommer has been through several major changes in her life for one so young. She will continue to progress as she adjusts to this last move and as her family continues to work with her. More on this gal to come.
Update 07/27/09: There is good news for Sommer. Her foster dad has work in the country and she has been going along. There’s lots of safe space so she is getting an abundance of exercise, just ripping around through rivers, creeks and open fields at 100 m.p.h. It makes this young, somewhat stressed out and nervous pup sleep like a baby!! She is winning hearts with her progress and at this rate, will find herself ready for one more move, that being into her forever home. Her traveling days could be over soon!
