Snickers VI was obviously very loved and well cared for during her first year of life. She came from a Pennsylvania home with a 4-year-old and a 10-year-old, but she growled at the 4 year-old-when she tried to take food away from Snickers. The family had a previous experience with a different dog biting the older daughter and they were fearful about something like that happening to the younger daughter. Also, Snickers had a couple of accidents in her former house which may have been a result of her being in heat. So, Snickers found her way to the shelter, who contacted MAESSR immediately.
This beautiful, healthy gal was recently spayed and is healing well. The vet indicated she had a minor skin infection (some dry, flaky patches) and prescribed antibiotics so the infection does not affect the surgical incision. Her coat is beautiful, and her skin is soft, so it seems this treatment is working well. Snickers loves being brushed and will stand completely still when being bathed. If you have a walk in shower, she will sometimes try to join you! She loves having her ears rubbed and has no problem being touched anywhere.
Snickers forms attachments with women very quickly, but is a little more standoffish with men. So far at her foster home, she has become very close to all family members, including a 13-year-old boy. When Snickers is home alone, she gets upset and barks, but does not get destructive. She also barks when someone unfamiliar enters the house. Generally, though, Snickers is a quiet dog, content to all of her time at your side. Completely housetrained, she has had no accidents in her foster home. She was reportedly crate-trained, but has free run of the house now and there have been no problems.
Although she is a very quick learner, Snickers does not believe that her place is anywhere other than with her people, whether on the couch or on the bed. She does jump a bit when first greeting her people and is learning quickly that counter-surfing is not okay. She pulls a little on the leash when walking and gets skittish around people walking near her, but she is learning quickly. So, her new family will need to do a little leash work with her. Snickers comes immediately when called and is completely trusted off the leash. She knows “sit” and “down” and will stay as long as her person is in sight. She gives her paw and will wait to take a treat. She has taken food when it was held low, but once she was told “no,” she stopped. Snickers is great in a fenced yard and has not shown any desire to dig or jump the fence.
Snickers likes and respects cats, having shared her foster home with five of them. Also, she has learned the command “No cats.” For braver cats, she will calmly walk by them; however, she is anxious to meet the shyer cats. Snickers is also living with two larger dogs. The resident dogs are too old to want to play, but Snickers is great with other dogs she has met while walking. While Snickers and the resident dogs get along, Snickers is somewhat object possessive of her people. When the other dogs comes near when she is with her foster mom, she grumbles at them, so Snickers would be better in a house where she doesn’t have to compete for attention. Although she will grumble to protect her person, her foster family has never seen her be antagonistic towards a person. Interestingly, she has met the horses and has no sense that she is much smaller than they are.
Adjusting her activity level to the people she is with, Snickers plays with her toys and enjoys chasing, although not dropping, when playing fetch. Mostly, she loves to cuddle and is content to snuggle up to people sitting next to her. At night she sleeps glued to her foster mother’s side. Snickers loves riding in the car. After five minutes, she curls up and sleeps.
Snicker’s foster mom says she is the sweetest dog she has ever met. How about making this love bug your own?
