Update 07/06/2013: “If your home is pup-free and without resident male dogs, Smoky would love to make your acquaintance.”
After 2 months in his new home, Smoky started having issues with his 14 year-old Springer male housemate and was returned to MAESSR. His original foster mom, knowing what an easy dog he was to have around, welcomed him back. He gets along there fine with the pesky 9 month- old Afghan female pup and the 12 year-old male terrier and has fallen into his prior routine of sleeping in an open crate or on a rug under the kitchen table at night. That said, this usually mellow boy may have to go to a home without other males. He probably wants a home without a pesky pup too. Smoky puts up with her but having his ears nibbled when he’s asking his foster mom for cuddles gets old after a while.
Yes……………the photos of Smoky looking with adoring eyes at the humans reflect his usual attitude. Who could resist such an appeal for lovin’s? If your home is pup-free and without resident male dogs, Smoky would love to make your acquaintance. Please ask about meeting him today. You’ll be his in a heartbeat!
Original: “Although he has never had formal obedience training, he knows “sit,” “down,” and, his favorite, “high five!”
When he was less than a year old, sweet Smokey was no longer wanted by his original owner and became an outdoor farm dog in Pennsylvania. Since the farm was not fenced, this easy-going, people-loving youngster would wander off and end up being posted as “dog found” in various locations around town. Since his owner did not want to solve this problem by keeping Smokey tied up, he turned to MAESSR for help.
In spite of being an outside dog for almost three years, Smokey is housetrained and stands by the door of his foster home when he needs to go out. He self-crates or sleeps in whatever empty dog bed he finds available. When his foster family is not home, he is gated in with the resident 7 month old puppy because the pup likes Smokey’s company. He shows no urge to counter-surf or trash dive; he does not get on furniture nor does he seem to have any bad habits—good boy!!
Outside of the home, this handsome guy’s good manners continue to shine. Smokey is leash trained and will heel at a slow or quick pace. Although he has never had formal obedience training, he knows “sit,” “down,” and, his favorite, “high five!” His recall, however, is not reliable, particularly if he is focused on critters. During his car ride to his foster home, Smokey slept quietly and once in his foster home, he tolerated having his nails cut and shaggy tangled coat trimmed down for the summer.
Smokey has really enjoyed playing tug and chase with resident puppy and he tolerates her “mouthing.” Reportedly, he loves to swim and hunt, but is afraid of gunfire associated with hunting game birds with humans. He is not keen on loud noises either. Dog parks are high on his list of fun places to visit and he enjoys playing with the new friends he meets there.
Smokey is a smart, mellow young man who has shown great aptitude to learn. He loves to please and his beautiful eyes just shine with love at getting individual attention. If you are looking for a companion with reasonable size, great manners, mellow attitude, and a “happy” Springer smile, Smokey will be the wonderful dog for you.
