Update 03/15/10:
Pups grow so quickly at this stage and little Smitty is no exception. He has gained 5 pounds in foster care and is now up to 16.8 pounds! His pre-neutering blood test did show anemia so the vet ordered a medication for him that likely will be completed by his adopting family. He’s that close to being ready for forever love! What a lucky family that makes this absolute cutie their own!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Update 03/02/10:
Little Smitty is enjoying his time in foster care as much as his foster family is enjoying him. In just the short time he’s been with them, Smitty is quickly gaining weight and energy. He had lost some fur due to a skin problem and is still on a round of antibiotics to complete treatment. Since he is no longer spending his time scratching, Smitty can focus on more important puppy business like chewing, pouncing, and bouncing.
Smitty takes great joy in playing with the elder resident Springer in the house who has been very gentle with him, only having to put him in his place on a few occasions. Playing with toys is great fun too. Some of Smitty’s favorites are an oversized rawhide, nylabones, rope bones and, of course, tennis balls! After a busy day of play, Smitty does sleep through the night and has been keeping his crate clean and dry all night long. Only after Smitty hears his foster mom’s feet hit the floor upstairs each morning does he start to whimper.
When it comes to his crate training, Smitty is doing very well. He willingly enters his crate when asked to “go to bed” and runs full speed for it when his foster mom has a food bowl in hand! Housebreaking is going equally as well with only a few accidents to date.
Smitty is also working on his doggy manners/commands such as “sit,” “off,” and “leave it.” He does a great job of trading up for more appropriate chew toys and is learning that humans will provide good pats and belly rubs if you don’t use them as chew toys!
Smitty’s schedule this week includes: pre-anesthetic blood work, vaccination boosters, and play, play, play. Soon he’ll be neutered and then ready for his forever home! If your New Year’s resolution included more exercise, we’ve got the secret to your success right here!

It’s raining puppies at MAESSR! In addition to the previous litter of six from South Carolina, there are five little Springer brothers from Virginia who are looking for homes! Talk about cute little wiggle butts full of love and fun!
The concern of a good Samaritan started them on the road to becoming MAESSR pups. When she found nine puppies eating a deer carcass, she kept one of them, found homes for three others, and took the remaining five little boys to a local Virginia shelter. The shelter contacted MAESSR for help in their placement.
At approximately 10-12 weeks old, each puppy is ADORABLE beyond words. More news will come as unique personalities emerge and each puppy makes progress. Soon they will be ready for loving families who will take them to obedience classes, be their new playmates and soon their very best friends. Check back soon! This won’t take long!
