Update 12/14/12:
Now is your chance to bring a senior “Home for the Holidays!” MAESSR has extended its fall campaign to match our senior and special needs Springers with new, loving families. This is a wonderful opportunity to open your home and hearts to a dog that really needs you.
Adoption fees are being waived for all seniors (age 9 and older) and for special needs dogs through the end of December. Keep your eyes open for that special one who would fit perfectly into your life! It could be Sir Charles; it may be another. Let your heart guide the decision and all else will fall into place!
Update 12/14/12:
His foster family finds Sir Charles a wonderful, loving boy. A real cuddler, he loves to snuggle up with his people on the sofa for a nap or on the bed to sleep all night long. Cold winter nights seem much toastier with Charlie by your side!
Medication to regulate his thyroid has been very beneficial. With his thyroid levels corrected, his foster mom has seen much improvement in his energy level, skin, and hair. In order to observe his skin, Sir Charles had been shaved down. His foster mom has added a really good vitamin to his regime; this is helping his hair grow back faster and a darker color. It will not be long now until he has a beautiful thick coat.
Sir Charles is an excellent house guest who displays wonderful manners. No counter-surfing for this distinguished gentleman! When it’s time to leave the house, this boy is a very happy traveler, eager to go for a car ride. It only takes the invitation, “Charlie, let’s go for a ride!” for him to be out the door and jumping into the car. Short ride or long ride, he’s a great traveling companion.
Sir Charles gets along great with the other dogs in his foster home. Occasionally he will get a bit overly enthusiastic and one of them will tell him to back offbut that doesn’t happen often now. He’s learning which behaviors are appreciated and which ones are not. Charlie enjoys their company and will need a canine companion if he’s going to be left alone.
“Me and My Shadow” is a song that brings Charlie to mind. He follows his foster mom around like he’s stuck to her with glue. If she moves, Charlie moves! Adults aren’t the only people this sweet boy bestows his love upon. He also is good with children of all ages.
We’re not sure who dubbed Charles as “Sir.” Perhaps it was the Queen herself! Regardless, it is certainly a well-deserved title for this charming lad. Looking for a special Springer to love? Sir Charles will treat you like royalty!
Update 11/09/12:
Sir Charles returned to MAESSR because he had a couple of incidents with the resident dog in his adoptive home. His new family really loved Charlie, but the chemistry just was not right between the two dogs. Much time and effort was put into getting Charlie’s skin issues resolved by his adoptive family, and he looks great now.
Charlie walked into his foster mom’s home and stole her heart. He is such a great boy. Due to his anxiety of being left alone, he was started on an inexpensive medication. It also helps that there are multiple dogs in his foster home. He has not had any accidents and has done very well while his foster family is at work for the day.
Two minor incidents of snapping at another dog occurred when Sir Charles was “guarding” his foster mom. Neither incident escalated, and Charlie was told it was unacceptable for him to “guard” his foster mom.
Sir Charles will be taking a little break while settling into his foster home so that a decision can be made about the next phase of his life. Keep checking back on this cutie.
Update 06/21/12:
Sir Charles has settled in well with his foster family. He is most definitely a woman’s dog. Given a choice between his foster dad and his foster mom, he will choose mom every time. He has really begun to relax in her presence. He now runs outside with her, plays with toys (especially squeaky toys), and is generally much more playful than when he first returned to foster care. Charles has also made good progress with his anxiety. When his foster parents need to leave the house for an extended period, they leave him in the kitchen with the resident female Springer and the two get along fine. This has really helped Charles and he hasn’t had an accident in a month. Now that he is comfortable in his foster home, the accidents are likely over.
As far as health is concerned, Charles is now up-to-date on all his shots and heartworm negative. He did have additional surgery on his eyes to fix a persistent eye infection problem. His eyelashes were previously touching his eyes which can contribute to this problem, so they lifted his eyelids a little. Once he returns to the vet to have his stitches out, he will be free and clear! Charles also had a full thyroid panel done which showed that he had low thyroid levels. He’ll continue to be monitored while in foster care to be sure he is at an appropriate dose of medication for this condition.
Sir Charles recently demonstrated his commitment to his foster family in a very unique way. His foster mom was in the kitchen with him when she put on an oven mitt to pull something out of the oven. Unbeknownst to her, the mitt was wet. Sir Charles began barking and tugging at her apron as if he was playing. She tried to shoo him away, but he kept on bugging her. She finally pulled the pan out of the oven and burnt her hand. Of course his foster family reached the only obvious conclusion: Sir Charles recognized that the oven mitt was wet and tried to warn his foster mom!
This handsome hero will soon be looking for his forever home. Do you have a pup that could use a buddy and room for a Springer shadow at your house? Sir Charles might be just the guy for you!
Update 05/14/12:
“Adorable…….He’s only been here a short while, but he’s such a sweetheart we feel like we’ve known him since 2009.” 2009 is when Sir Charles first became a MAESSR boy and as alumni, he has returned because his owner could no longer care for him.
Since arriving in his new foster home, Sir Charles has really made himself comfortable and has bonded with the lady of the house. He has settled in nicely with his other house mates without any issues……. the resident springer, two cats and two kids. He has a very laid back disposition and is content to spend his time in the presence of his family. Indifferent to the resident cats, he would be well suited to a house with felines.
Charles’ owner indicated he had some separation issues. He does certainly get worried about being left alone, but his foster family has found that having another dog in the house for company has helped him with his anxiety. There have not been any accidents when leaving him at home. He did mark a bit on his arrival day but has not done so since………great to see! Unfortunately, Charles has had some issues with crates in his past and, as a result, is missing his front teeth. Having no teeth, though, doesn’t stop him from eating normally or enjoying a treat or two; it is simply not an issue for him.
This gent’s house manners are very good. Charles is not a counter-surfer or trash-picker. At dinner time, he will simply lay down under the table but does not beg. At night he settles in the bedroom with his foster parents and sleeps through the night. He will, however, let you know at about 6:30 sharp that it’s time to go out……….:)).
Charles’ forever home should definitely be one with another dog to provide company for him. He will do best with people that will not need to leave him alone for extended periods of time. He really needs and deserves a stable home with someone who is able to spend time with him. This dog needs attention and, in return, will give you his love and absolute loyalty. Give Charles a new home and make it his last…………he’ll reward you with 100% devotion!!
Update 10/08/09:
Charles has had a busy time since coming to MAESSR and is taking all the new things in his life like a champ. Charlie has recently had surgery on his eyes, sort of a doggie eye lift to help with the eye infections he was subject to, which he will have no more. He took all this, along with changing foster homes, like a pro and is a happy tail-wagging boy.
His new foster mom has discovered how much this cute boy loves cats and there are plenty on the farm where he now resides. Charlie can hardly wait to get outside every morning to make his rounds of all his new kitty friends. It is quite funny to watch Charlie take his daily walk with his furry little buddies in tow. This sweet boy continues to have no bad habits in the house, although he does like to check out what is on the low counter in the kitchen from time to time. His house training is coming along well with no accidents in his new foster home;he is even starting to ask to go out now.
Charlie hasn’t quite figured out the cuddle part of being a Springer yet, but he sure has the Velcro part perfected. His foster mom is sure the Springer kisses are not far off now. Although a little shy when meeting strangers, he is a perfect gentleman and quickly warms up to the attention. Riding in the car has become one of his favorite things even if it is only to the mail box.
Charlie is finding the world to be a fascinating place to explore and is looking forward to the day he is ready for a furever home that will help him to do just that.
Original:
Sir Charles and his housemates, Chrissy and Precious 3, were given away by their original owners in 2007 and since then have lived happily in New Jersey with their second family. Sir Charles has spent many hours with the dad of the house perfecting his hunting skills while Chrissy and Precious played with the family’s 8 children. When the family’s landlord said the dogs had to go, MAESSR was contacted for assistance.
Of the three dogs Sir Charles was the only one to test positive for heartworms. He began treatment shortly after arriving in his foster home and has finished it without complication. He is in overall good health and is now waiting to be neutered.
Sir Charles lived outdoors while with his surrendering family, so he has had lots to learn about indoor living. He’s made steady progress and isn’t looking back. Life as part of a family is truly to his liking. His house manners are coming along and, though he occasionally marks in the house, he has made much improvement.
Sir Charles is a total lovebug. When not hunting he must have played with some of the children in his surrendering family as he is comfortable with youngsters down to 6 years.
With the worry and necessary quiet time that goes with heartworm treatment behind him, Sir Charles can look forward to his best days being ahead of him. More on this sweetie to come…………….
