Update 09/29/08:
Sheena had her stitches removed and has made a good recovery from her spay surgery. At that time, they did more blood work which showed her white cell count still a little high, though much lower than when previously tested. She is on another two weeks of antibodies and should then be fine.
Even though some may not be enticed to adopt her because of her tail, it’s so beautiful! Her foster mom loves to watch her run with the tail flowing. When Sheena wags her tail, it is gorgeous. She is a loving, little girl who wants to be near her people. She’s very intrigued by everything, even watching her foster mom put make-up on in the morning. Mirrors amuse her. She tries to figure out why she sees her foster mom “here” and “there.” Sheena usually goes around the yard with her nose to the ground and might just be a very good hunting dog. She loves to cut up with the house dog which is half her size. They play until he is exhausted and ready to go to bed.
Wouldn’t puppy Sheena make a great addition to your family?
Update 08/30/08:
Sheena is doing almost too well after being spayed. Her foster mom has to remind her that she just had surgery and should be resting – not jumping like a maniac! Since Sheena is such a good girl in the crate, she has not required any sedatives. Listen to your foster mom, Sheena! Sheena had been exposed to a dog with kennel cough, so she is receiving antibiotics as prevention since her white cell count was elevated. Ten days after her surgery, her stitches will be removed and she will be ready to go to her forever home!
If Sheena’s recuperation continues to go well, she will get to meet the resident cat who has been isolated from her up until now. There will be more news to follow on that front! Another first for her will be a leash walk. As she had been in heat, her foster mom did not want to risk a chance meeting with a male dog. But now that she has been spayed, the world of walking safely on a leash is opened to her.
Although Sheena certainly knows the “sit” command, especially when there is a treat involved, she is such a busy little girl that sometimes she does not pay attention and is easily distracted. This little imp is quite a smart one, too. Already, Sheena is very aware when her foster mom is leaving for work and she does her best to not get “caught” to be put into the crate. Even treats don’t bring her near! Her foster mom has to employ some trickery of her own. Only when her foster mom says, “Let’s go outside,” will Sheena run to the door, which is near the crate, and then her foster mom is able to get her crated without difficulty.
Despite her impish nature, Sheena absolutely is a little love bug and wants to be close to her “people.”
Original:
Sheena is a lively and beautiful girl with a dainty full tail and a love of life. She has been in her foster home for just a short time, has settled nicely and has proven herself a joy to be around. She went to the vet for her check up and was a good girl. She is receiving treatment for intestinal parasites and checked out well in every other way. At the vet’s office Sheena met kids and was very gentle with them, even with one waving a lollipop in her face.
With housetraining almost complete, Sheena now goes to the door and then races to her people to let them know she needs to go out. She is also crate-trained and sleeps through the night in her crate. She is a very good girl in the crate. She didn’t have any prior training but is learning “sit” and, though she jumps on the furniture, she is learning “off.” She also tends to try and sneak a peek up on the counters but again, she has learned the meaning of “off” in this situation too. Sheena loves to be close to her people and is enjoying watching the Olympics with them.
Sheena will bark at other dogs when passing them or seeing them because she wants to play, play, play. She meets them all very well and takes direction from them if they correct her. She happily comes to her people when called. She is currently walked using a halter and will need work on her leash walking skills.
Sheena is a little wild in a car at first and then settles but needs to be tethered or crated for safety. As well, due to her lively nature, she should not go to a home with children under 8. Sheena would make an excellent agility dog. Because she is under 1 year old, obedience class will be a requirement in her adoptive home. Sheena became a MAESSR girl after being abandoned and then sheltered in western Maryland. She is barely more than a baby and showing terrific promise in so many ways. If you are game for a great and gorgeous youngster to train and love on, Sheena would be the one!
