Original: “Sheeba is able to move surprisingly quickly on her three legs, but does seem to tire and become a little breathless.”
When Sheeba’s owner died and her family left her at a western Pennsylvania shelter, MAESSR was called in to care for this sad, lonely lady.
After a rocky start with some health issues, Sheeba is doing much better and settling in at her foster home. She initially had no appetite and turned down even the yummiest of food including baby foods, peanut butter, chicken and hamburger. Now, while still not a food-oriented Springer, Sheeba is eating regularly with better enthusiasm. She gets along well with the resident Springer, but had no patience for a visiting pup that overnighted. In fairness to Sheeba, though, she had only been in her home one night when he arrived and she didn’t feel well herself.
Sheeba is able to move surprisingly quickly on her three legs, but does seem to tire and become a little breathless. Moving too fast can cause her to stumble. She walks well on a leash as she and her foster mom are taking progressively longer walks around the yard—a good place to hang out and listen to baseball on the radio, also!
This special senior is loving, good-natured, and tolerates handling well. She does not mind having her feet and ears touched and pills popped down her mouth—what a girl! Sheeba is housetrained but has some minor incontinence when sleeping soundly. She has no ability to counter-surf and no interest in trash. So far, toys, bones and treats have not tempted her. Car rides cause just a bit of whining.
While Sheeba has shown some anxiety manifested as barking, whining and panting, she is not destructive and her foster mom hopes this behavior will decrease with the security and consistency provided in her new home.
Overall, this lovely lady has shown a sweet disposition toward all the humans she’s met in her new situation. With continued TLC she should be able to enjoy her senior years to the fullest. Watch for updates as she travels to the vet, groomer, and experiences all the love her foster family will provide.
