Shawnee is one of the five puppies and the sire that were rescued from a Pennsylvania puppy mill and had a short stay at the Philadelphia SPCA before coming into MAESSR’s care.
Shawnee had no problems at all in adjusting to his foster home. He is a bundle of Springer puppy love and energy! Shawnee loves to play and is learning the ropes with the help of the resident dogs with whom he gets along well. By watching them and following their lead, Shawnee quickly learned to use the doggy door in his foster home. As nature calls, he goes out the door and does his duties outside. His housebreaking is coming along well with only a few accidents and those are subsiding each day.
A smart puppy who is eager to please his people, Shawnee is learning “sit” and is doing well with this command. So that he does not enter his foster grandmother’s room once she has gone to bed, Shawnee is learning “stay.” He also knows “come” and will come running when called. Often he will run and dive bomb into his doggy bed which he loves. Crate-training is going well for Shawnee too. He knows when it is time for his foster mom to leave for work and he gets his morning meal in the crate when she leaves. At bedtime, Shawnee goes into his crate, crying and talking a little before settling down.
Shawnee loves to play with toys, chasing them and bringing them back to his foster mom, on occasion, for another toss. He loves to be held and cuddled, too. When he met the resident cats, Shawnee showed a little interest but was more interested in checking out their toys! He loves to go for his walks and will check out all the smells in the field to see if he can find a bunny or two.
Shawnee spent a morning with a group of children and their parents talking about dog rescue. He was the center of attention being passed around and held by many adoring children. Shawnee also went to a Halloween parade and sat quietly on a lap as fire trucks passed with sirens blaring and marching bands passed with cymbals clanging. Shawnee also met three more adult dogs and enjoyed playing with them. Throughout this busy and noisy day, he seemed to take it all in stride and never seemed stressed.
Shawnee would love to have an active home with lots of play time and lots of love. Having another dog to play with and to have a buddy would be another part of his dream home.
