Update 04/03/08:
Shaggy is indeed the loving, sweet dog that the shelter staff found him to be. He has recently switched foster homes and now has a little person to live with full time. Shaggy is a semi-big boy but as gentle as a 5-pound puppy. The 5-year-old son in his foster family walks Shaggy around the house and Shaggy just follows, as content as he could be, licking little fingers along the way. Too cute! Shaggy has learned not to jump on people of any size, but especially the little ones.
When his foster mom is cooking, of course, Shaggy is by her side, hoping she drops something. If given the opportunity, he will put his paws on the counter but not to steal food. It is more of a curiosity thing. He is learning this is not acceptable.
Shaggy still gets excited for his walks but is learning and doing well with not pulling on the leash. He and the resident dog love to go to the dog park. Shaggy will find a stick and prance around the entire park, just as proud as can be – it’s the funniest thing! He loves to run, and even with his size, he is swift and agile. He could be a good field trial athlete.
If needed, Shaggy tolerates a crate but he doesn’t like to go in. He would do well as an only dog or with a companion. He is not needy and doesn’t bother the resident dog or cats. Indeed, he has befriended the female kitty. They seem to be best friends. She will sleep with him in his crate at night. They spoon together – also, too cute!! He is not destructive at all. Shaggy does like his bones and toys and seems to entertain himself by throwing them in the air and then retrieving them again.
Recently Shaggy traveled to Washington, DC with his family to see the cherry blossoms. He loved it. He gets excited for car rides and will pace but, after a few minutes, he settles down and will just put his nose slightly out the window and enjoy the ride. Shaggy’s new family will be adopting a wonderful dog and he is ready to meet them now!!!
Original:
Shaggy came to MAESSR after being found as a stray in West Virginia. The shelter staff kept saying he was such a loving boy, so MAESSR made the extra effort and got him into a foster home.
Shaggy wants love and attention more than he wants to breathe. He loves to be with you and to play with you. If you’re going somewhere in the car, Shaggy will gladly go with you as he loves to ride in the car. Inside the house, he needs a refresher in proper house manners since he will counter-surf if the opportunity presents itself. At night, he will sleep quietly in his crate. Going for a walk is a very exciting activity, so Shaggy pulls on the leash. He would greatly benefit from an obedience class.
Shaggy has marked a few times in his foster home, so the adoptive home will need to be diligent that this behavior does not become a habit.
Need love? Shaggy is waiting for you.
