Original: “Full of puppy energy, Schnitzel likes to play fetch and will chase rabbits, squirrels and birds in the yard.”
Schnitzel’s male owner always wanted a dog and was excited to add him to his family’s home in Maryland. Unfortunately, the female owner did not warm up to this idea of having a dog. After careful consideration, it was decided that it was in the best interest of Schnitzel to have a home where everyone wanted him. Thus, this sweet pup became a MAESSR dog.
This handsome young Springer loves people. He will happily sit on his foster mom’s feet all day while she works—the closer the better! In his original home, Schnitzel lived with two children, ages 5 and 10. He was generally good with them but a bit rough in his play. For his future home, it is recommended that he should live with kids 12 and older or with no children since he jumps on them and is mouthy when playing.
Schnitzel is housetrained and is crate trained but doesn’t like being in there too long. His previous owner said he is calmer if not crated at night. Full of puppy energy, Schnitzel likes to play fetch and will chase rabbits, squirrels and birds in the yard. His former owner would leash him and take him on a 2.5 mile run daily, so Schnitzel is a potential jogging partner for a runner in his forever home. On leash walks he pulls and startles with cyclists and lawn mowers. He barks a bit at the UPS truck and at people he might see out the window.
Schnitzel generally chews only on his toys but might chew a shoe if left around or a Tupperware lid– something that smells of food or his people. He will counter-surf given the chance.
In his foster home, Schnitzel has been receiving a low dose of an inexpensive anti-anxiety medication which has helped with his overall anxiety. His forever family will be required to keep him on this medication for a minimum of six months after adoption.
Schnitzel has had some basic training and knows “sit,” “fetch,” “down,” and “wait.” Note that MAESSR will require require his adoptive family to take Schnitzel through a series of obedience classes within 90 days of adoption. MAESSR only places puppies – even older ones like Schnitzel– in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience. MAESSR believes the decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. Taking these lessons with Schnitzel will help his new family to bond with him, too.
With a light coat, Schnitzel has never needed full grooming. But ears and hairy feet need occasional trimming and his foster mom discovered that he is not fond of having this done. He was very good at the vet, though.
Fitting to his name, this young Springer is cute enough to eat! He doesn’t need breading and frying, though. This sweet boy just wants to be loved.
