Original: “This sweet gentle fellow is ALL ABOUT EXERCISE AND PLAY!“
Sawyer was found as a stray and came into MAESSR after his two week stray hold was up at a New Jersey shelter. He is a very petite boy who has the most gorgeous ticking on his legs and freckles on his nose. This sweet gentle fellow is ALL ABOUT EXERCISE AND PLAY!
Fortunately for Sawyer, he currently resides with four male dogs who have no problem telling him when he has pushed their patience with him. He will settle alone gated away from other dogs with some toys and a hard bone, but is much happier rolling and wrestling with the “guys.” Since his foster brothers are all about the pool, he has had his first swimming lesson. He seemed a bit panicked at first, but, with the security of his humans, did seem to like it and wants to go back in.
This ball of energy stays gated from the other dogs at night and when his foster family is not home with him. Sawyer seems good about going outside although he did have two accidents in his foster home’s house. Those folks had to learn his signals and now seem to understand when he is trying to tell them it is potty time. He did not like the crate initially but is now happier to go in and settle knowing that it is a safe place to ride and to rest.
Sawyer is still a puppy at heart who pulls on his leash walks and has tried to counter-surf a few times. He is learning “no” and “off” quickly but will need tons of reinforcement. He wants to learn and please. This handsome young man listens to firm vocal corrections and checks back with his humans for praise and confidence. MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs one year old and younger to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption.
MAESSR’s new boy went to the groomer and had obviously not been through this process before. He was spooked by the dryer and did not like his nails being cut. The team worked slowly and patiently to make it a positive experience for him.
Sawyer needs a family who is able to be very firm and set limits with him; in return, they will have a GREAT DOG. However, a soft family not willing to correct and define limitations will quickly find this dog walking all over them. If you are looking for a couch potato who is happy with a walk once a week, Sawyer is not the dog for you! This boy needs a home that has the time to give him an hour of exercise a day and who will actively play ball, entertain him with other toys and teach him commands. What fun some lucky, dedicated people with have this fall with Sawyer!!
