Update 08/23/12:
Now is your chance to “Fall in LOVE with a Senior!” MAESSR has a new program to match up our senior and special needs Springers with new, loving families. This is a wonderful opportunity to Fall in LOVE all over again with a dog that really needs you.
Adoption fees are being waived for all seniors (age 9 and older) and for special needs dogs through the end of September. Keep your eyes open for that special one who would fit perfectly into your life! It could be Savannah III; it may be another. Let your heart guide the decision and all else will fall into place!
Original:
This sweet Southern lady became a MAESSR gal when her South Carolina family moved to an area where they could no longer care for her. Soon, a new loving family will be taking Savannah home!
Don’t think that Savannah is an old lady just because she has had twelve candles on her latest birthday cake! She is healthy and full of life! Her only issue is battling allergies. For the past four months, Savannah has been on prednisone to treat her allergies with the side effect of her hunting endlessly for food. Currently, she is being weaned off of this medication and when this process is complete, she will revisit the vet to see if her allergies can be controlled in another manner. Besides being a bit hard of hearing, Savannah is in amazingly good health.
Children have been part of Savannah’s life for the past twelve years as her original family had two children who grew up with her. In her foster home, she loves to be petted by the neighborhood children, ages five to twelve; she has not had the opportunity to meet younger children yet. Savannah gets to enjoy human company all day as she and the resident ESS get to come to work daily with their mom. Good with all of the clients and the delivery people, Savannah definitely enjoys all the attention that she gets while at work. With so many new friends to enjoy, she doesn’t mind the 9 to 5 workday! Although cats are part of her foster home, they are the least of her concerns; she is above running after cats!
Housetrained but never crate-trained, Savannah is a good, reliable girl who doesn’t chew or get into trouble. When her foster parents go out to church, the movies, or dinner, she and the resident Springer have full run of the house and they have not thrown any wild parties even when left along for up to 4 1/2 hours. Savannah does not jump on the furniture and at bed time she cuddles in her bed on the floor in the master bedroom and sleeps soundly the entire night.
Because of her being on prednisone and constantly looking for food, Savannah has counter-surfed and has gotten into the trash. Hopefully, these behaviors will stop once she is off of this drug. When offered a treat, Savannah will sit politely with the resident Springer and each will nicely take their treat. She eats meals with her furry foster brother and has good manners when eating next to him. When her foster family is eating, Savannah does beg, again a possible side effect of the prednisone.
Due to the oppressive heat lately, Savannah has only gone for walks early in the morning or later at night. While she enjoys her walks, she does have a leash pulling issue so her foster mom is working with her on that. As to commands, Savannah knows the basics: “sit,” “stay,” and “off,” but she is not to be trusted off the leash. She loves playing with her ball with her foster family and happily engages in tug-of-war with the resident ESS and sometimes wins! Savannah enjoys snooping in the yard and chasing butterflies from the butterfly bush. She is very good in the car and enjoys her daily trips to the office. All who come in contact with Savannah simply adore her; Savannah is the belle of the neighborhood, the office, and her foster home.
If you enjoy playing a good game of ball with a four-footed friend and like company when you are out in the yard, Savannah may just be the Springer for you! Although she would do well as the queen of the house, Savannah will also share her space with another calm dog. Having parents who are empty nesters who can spend time with her and having visiting grandchildren would be her dream. Bring this sweet Southern Belle into your life and heart!
