Update 08/04/10:
Sammy is doing great in his foster home. He is a true Velcro boy, always staying close by his foster mom’s side or watching her. With a little TLC and regular runs around the farm, Sammy has developed some nice muscle tone and now sports a gleaming liver and white coat.
This intelligent Springer loves to please his people and is eager to learn. Sammy has even started fetching the newspaper in the driveway and bringing it inside! His foster family is enjoying teaching him new tricks, and surely he would love to continue this in his forever home. Perhaps retrieving slippers or learning agility obstacles is in this pup’s future!
Sammy is a very cute boy who is going to make his new owners extremely happy. Are you ready to add this great guy to your family?
Original:
Sammy’s military family is being transferred to Hawaii and cannot take him along. They sought MAESSR’s help to find Sammy a loving new home.
Having been an outside dog in his original home, Sammy is adapting well to life as an indoor dog. His foster parents let him out every two to three hours to avoid accidents. When outside, he is told, “Go pee pee” and he urinates on command. He will also stand by the door to indicate his need to go out. His foster family has not tried to crate him as there has been no need to do so.
The resident dogs are helping Sammy learn the finer points of inside living and he is getting along well with them. They all have the run of the house when his foster family is gone, just lying around and sleeping. At night, he sleeps on his own pillow in the bedroom along with the other two dogs. Sammy has great house manners with no counter-surfing and no barking. He would like to get on furniture and bed like the other dogs, but when told “no,” he will not do this. This good boy has no destructive traits.
Sammy walks nicely on a leash staying on one side and rarely pulling. When leash walked, he is skittish with other dogs coming up to him and he will grumble at them out of fear. Once he knows the dogs after a few meetings, he is very friendly with them. He has not met any cats on his walks, so the jury is still out on the feline front. In his previous home, Sammy had received training and responds to the commands “come,” “sit,” and “down.”
Sammy’s foster family lives on a farm which gives him the daily opportunity to run around a nine acre hay field following a John Deere Gator with the resident dogs. Also, he has a daily leashed walk with the other dogs for at least a mile. When it is time to cool off, Sammy loves to lie down in the creek. What a life! He will retrieve a tennis ball and drop it in front of you. If he does not want to do something like fetch, he will lie down and not look at you! He is not a particularly high energy dog but he certainly enjoys the running he does around the farm. He always stays right around the area without straying. Good boy, Sammy!
Although Sammy would like to play rough house with the resident dogs while inside the house, he and the other dogs have to take their rough play and chasing outside. He carries around his stuffed animal while in the house and likes to Velcro himself to his foster parents. He is always by their side and watches their faces. In his exuberance to greet them and connect with them, Sammy does jump a little and wants to mouth a hand if it is put out for him. If a face needs washing, Sammy is glad to oblige. He is also glad to cooperate if his foster parents feel like brushing him. He is a sweet, gentle baby doll who is as nice as he is handsome!
Sammy is looking for an active family that will return all of the love he has in his heart. Children and dogs could be part of his new family too!
